SOLON¬– Using funds from a Lions Clubs International Emergency Relief Grant, the Solon Centennial Lions Club partnered with Sam’s Main Street Market to distribute $7,000 worth of perishable groceries to the Solon Community.
The groceries were intended to replace refrigerated or frozen items families lost due to the extended power outage caused by the derecho. Lion and City Administrator Cami Rasmussen helped the Club project the extent of the power outages and number of families affected. After contacting Sandy Hanson of the Solon Food Pantry and Senior Support, the Lions were referred to other recommended resources. In Solon, with the help of Becky West, with the Solon Community School District, Father Charles Fladung and staff at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rev. Ken Ferguson and staff at the Solon United Methodist Church, the initial dated invitations were distributed in the community. After that, general coupons were available at Sam’s Main Street Market for customers who requested this resource. The Lions Shopping Days began on Sept. 21 and coupons were completely redeemed on Oct. 7. The initial timetable was one week from Sept. 21-28. Many folks were hesitant to use the coupons, in case there were others who were more in need... this is Solon... these are folks who think of others, and want to help others. Solon Centennial Lions and Sam’s Main Street Market are blessed to be a part of this generous community, and are pleased to once again thank everyone who helped.
