Spartans take title at CCA relays: Ferguson sets shot put record

VINTON– The Solon boys track team ran twice this past week, looking to prepare for the WaMaC conference meet to be held this Thursday at Benton Community High School in Van Horne.
The team ran to a second-place finish Monday as they competed on a cold and rainy evening in Vinton.

Ferguson sets school record in discus
Senior thrower Dalton Ferguson led the team in field events, while setting a new school record in the process. His throw of 164’ in the discus bettered the previous mark held by Colton Wears. Dalton added a first place finish in the shot with a toss of 57’8, and holds the school record in that event as well.
Other field event place winners included:
Shot put: Danny Whitmore, second, 44’1;
Discus: Tanner Wymer, third, 142’ 2.
Connor Ham led the team in the open running events, finishing first three times, including the 100-meter dash (11.33), the 200-meter dash (23.29) and the 110-meter high hurdles (14.72).
Other open running event place winners included:
400-meter dash: Trevor Yahr, second, 53.63;
800-meter dash: Trevor Yahr, second, 2:14.01;
3,200-meter run: Patrick McGill, third, 11:03.
The 4x100 team, consisting of Jordan Wymer, Bo Black, Jacob Gibbs and Connor Ham, brought home gold in the relay events, with a time of 46.08.

4x200: Nate Kennedy, Eli DeWitt, Jacob Coons and Emilio Villagrana, second, 1:40.91;
4x400: Zach Keinholz, Jake Schaekenbach, Payton Nicol and Jordan Wymer, second, 3:37;
4x800: Jake Schaekenbach, Jordan Wymer, Payton Nicol, Zach Kienholz, second, 9:03;
Shuttle Hurdle Relay: Jacob Gibbs, Bo Black, Colton Hansel and Trevor Nelson, third, 1:06.7;
1600 Medley: Nate Kennedy, Eli DeWitt, Emilio Villagrana, Niklas Rehnke, third, 4:13.6.

The team also competed Thursday evening, finishing first at Clear Creek Amana.

Dalton Ferguson swept the throwing events again, throwing 55’9 in the shot put and 156’11 in the discus. Danny Whitmore added a sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 42’10, and Tanner Wymer was runner-up in the discus at 142’4.
Matt Roeder won the high jump with a leap of 5’10 and Jaden Durr finished third at 5’8. Zach Nunemaker was runner-up in the long jump, going 20’5, with Halston Durr close behind at third, with a jump of 20’4 1/2.
Ham pulled off the trifecta again, winning the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and high hurdles. His times were 11.31, 23.11 and 14.42 respectively.
Other open running event place winners included:
Trevor Yahr: 400-meter dash, second, 55.52;
Patrick McGill: 1,600-meter run, sixth, 5:04.7;
400 meter hurdles: Keegan Hess, third, 1:04.1; Josh Prybil, fourth, 1:04.45.

4x800: Zach Kienholz, Jake Schaekenbach, Payton Nicol, Trevor Yahr, second, 8:56.3;
Shuttle Hurdle: Jacob Gibbs, Keegan Hess, Colton Hansel, Nathan Christensen, fourth, 1:07.49;
4x200: Brandon Childs, Nathan Christensen, Jaden Durr, Emilio Villagrana, second, 1:38.98;
1,600 medley: Nate Kennedy, Eli DeWitt, Emilio Villagrana, Niklas Rehnke, third, 4:03.26;
4x100: Jordan Wymer, Nathan Christensen, Brandon Childs, Connor Ham, first, 45.69;
4x400: Trevor Yahr, Jake Schaekenbach, Payton Nicol, Jordan Wymer, third, 3:44.94.
Following this week’s conference meet, the team will set its sights on a district title, hoping to qualify as many events as it can for state, where it should be a serious contender to bring home a trophy.
