Spartans take down Indians

Solon edges Marion, blows out No. 3 Camanche late

SOLON– Chalk up two more quality home wins, both against Indians.
Solon’s varsity boys’ basketball team pulled out a 49-48 thriller against Marion then clamped down on Camanche (third-ranked in Class 2A) Saturday, Dec. 19, for a 68-44 win.
For Camanche, it was the first loss of the season.
The Spartans won the game in the final period.
Solon jumped out to a 20-13 first-quarter lead, but Camanche closed the gap and trailed by only a point at halftime, 27-26. The Spartans built a respectable nine-point margin in the third, but held the Indians to only three points in the final period to salt the game away.
Solon outscored Camanche 41-18 in the second half.
David Bluder led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. Will Noonan added 11, Carson Shive nine, and Ben Cusick and Kinnick Pusteoska each contributed eight points. Pusteoska was a perfect 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from the line, while Cusick went 4-5 shooting. Jake Quillin kicked in seven points.
The Spartans as a team were 11-12 from the free throw line (91.7 percent), with Noonan going 4-4, and 26-54 from the field (48.1 percent). Noonan and Shive each had four assists, while Quillin had three. Noonan added three steals.
Solon pulled down 32 rebounds, led by Cayden Knipper off the bench with eight. Pusteoska and Shive each had five.
The victory pushed Solon to a 5-1 record and its fifth straight win.
The Spartans had started the week Dec. 15 at home hosting Marion in a slugfest with a combined 27 turnovers and 35 fouls.
The Indians took an early first-quarter lead, attacking the basket and earning their first four points at the charity stripe.
Solon responded with a block by Pusteoska and a three-pointer by Noonan. Pusteoska’s low-post bucket made it a three-point game, but fouls mounted and Marion continued to shoot well, holding a 17-10 advantage at the end of the first period.
Marion’s Brayson Laube provided 11 of those first-quarter points, but the Solon defense held him to five more for the rest of the game.
That defense helped the Spartans cut into the margin in the second quarter, holding the Indians to only four total points.
Bluder hit a two-pointer, Shive a three-pointer and Cusick cleared the offensive glass for a put-back before Bo Janssen sank two free throws to knot the game at 19-19.
Solon took a brief 21-19 lead before Marion tied the game again, 21-21, for the halftime score.
It continued blow for blow in the third, but the Spartans limited the Indians to eight points and held a slim 33-29 edge going into the fourth. It went down to the wire, but Solon held off the charging Indians in the final period for the 49-48 win.
It was another balanced score sheet for the Spartans, with three players in double figures, led by Pusteoska with 13 on 6-6 shooting from the field. Bluder added 11, while Cusick turned in a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds (seven offensive). Shive added eight points and four assists.
Solon was 18-50 from the field (36 percent) and 10-22 from the free throw line (45.5 percent). Marion shot 15-45 from the field (33.3 percent) and 12-19 at the stripe (63.2 percent).
The Spartans were scheduled to close out the 2020 schedule at home Dec. 22 hosting Independence, and resume the season on the road at West Delaware Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021.
