SOLON– Halfway through the first period, it looked like a close match against one-win Anamosa.
Down 2-0, the Raiders scored a goal to slash the lead in half.
But then the Solon boys responded.
The Spartan defense clamped down, and the offense methodically moved back into Anamosa territory and tacked on two more goals in the closing moments of the half for a 4-1 lead.
Senior goalie Ryan Sears, relieving senior Eric Weetman, pitched a shut-out in the second period, Solon tacked on two more goals and ran away with a 6-1 victory April 20 at Spartan Stadium.
The win pushed the Spartans to 9-2 on the season, and Solon crept up to the No. 3 spot in the Class 1A rankings by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.
Junior Luke Yetley led the team with two goals, the second coming unassisted with just 2:32 remaining in the first period. Freshman Gabe Yetley, senior Isaac Vang, sophomore Rodney Wittich and junior Drew Bruck added goals for the Spartans. Assists came from junior Jorel Justus (two), and Luke and Gabe Yetley, with one each.
Bruck’s score came on a free kick from just past midfield with 3:17 to go in the first half.
Sears finished in the net with one save.
Solon hosts Mount Vernon Friday, April 27, and remains home to welcome Maquoketa Tuesday, May 1, before hitting the road for Central DeWitt Thursday, May 3.
