Spartans push Sabers, but fall, 62-38

Solon draws to within three in third quarter

SOLON– In the third period, Solon had Central DeWitt’s lead whittled away to three points on a breakaway by sophomore Kinnick Pusteoska.
It forced a Saber timeout and had Solon Head Coach Matt Lesan pumping his fist on the sidelines.
But Central DeWitt senior Tucker Kinney was not to be denied and his game-high 27 points led the Sabers past the Spartans in the fourth quarter for a 62-38 win in Solon Dec. 17.
The loss moved the Spartans to 2-4 on the season.
Kinney was 10-21 from the field and 7-10 from the free throw line, adding 10 rebounds for the Sabers, who shot nearly 45 percent from the floor. Solon statistics were not available.
The Spartans were in a hole early, but only trailed 14-9 after the first period. Down as many as 11 points in the second, Solon battled back to trail by seven, 23-16, at the half.
The Spartans clawed back into the game in the third period, drawing as close as three points at 27-24, but Central DeWitt outscored Solon 23-6 in the final eight minutes to pull away.
The Spartans will open 2020 on the road at Marion (Friday, Jan. 3, 2020) and Mount Vernon (Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020). The Spartans host West Delaware on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020
“Coming out of break our number one thing we are looking to improve on is our toughness and ability to do things the right way all the time,” Coach Lesan noted. “Right now we are inconsistent with our effort, inconsistent with our execution, and inconsistent with our discipline. All things we can correct over break, if we can work and build on that we are going to be a really tough matchup.
“We have an incredibly tough schedule, but one thing I love about this bunch is their ability to take on challenges,” he continued. “I'm excited to go into this schedule with this group of young men.”
