IOWA CITY– Coaches Mark Sovers, Dan Dall, Brad Wymer, Riley Takes, Denny Gruber and the Solon Spartan boys track team stepped up on Saturday, April 9, lining up next to 4A competition and the West High Trojans at West High School’s Hollingsworth Relays.
They stood the measure of their 4A competition, finishing seventh overall against 11 other larger school teams, with their presence felt in several events.
When Coach Sovers was asked what he felt about the boys competing against 4A competition, he smiled, peering through his darkened glasses, and said it would be good for them.
After two cancelled meets during the week, the Spartans looked ready, albeit a little short-staffed due to ACTs and a soccer game.
In the discus, Solon’s Jacob Coons took seventh place with a throw of 129-8; Tyler Linderbaum grabbed 11th throwing 125-3 and Grant Kollar and Ben Wilkerson took 25th (109-8) and 26th (108-3) respectively in the 47-competitor field.
The high jump saw Streeter McIlravy take second place among the 16 vying for positions, earning eight of Solon’s 30 team points. The highest-placing Spartan at the meet, McIlravy made his first outdoor leaps in competition this season, clearing 6-2 with Solon’s only other leaper, Adam Bock, finishing 17th (5-02). Matt Roeder did not jump.
Halston Durr left an impression in the sand pit of the long jump competition, good enough for a 3rd-place finish, and six more team points, with his leap of 20-11 3/4 and Storm Scott landed in 23rd with a leap of 16-3 1/2 in a field of 29.
Battling 45 other competitors, Solon’s hurlers tossed the shot put in the breezy conditions to finishes of 12th (Linderbaum, 42-5), 15th (Wilkerson, 42-5), 20th (Coal Flansburg, 39-9), 32nd (Jacob Coons, 38-1) and 33rd, (Zach Wegmann, 37-10).
After six heats of the 100-meter dash, Solon’s Nate Christensen grabbed six team points with his third-place time of 11.66. Hunter Kula finished 37th (13.00) and Matt Folkerts finished 43rd (13.40) in the 45-deep field.
The 200-meter run saw the Spartans’ Austin Kennedy take 12th (23.81), Kendrick Harris grabbed 20th (24.42), Luke Ira was 25th (24.63) and Hunter Kula finished 48th (27.87) during the seven heat races.
Graeson Dall finished seventh (52.84) in the 400-meter dash, leading Trevor McGill in 19th (55.65) and Keegan Holub in 41st (1:00.48) following six heats of competition.
Dall and Holub pulled double-distance-duty finishing eighth (2:05.37) and 32nd (2:25.72) respectively in the 800-meter run.
Grabbing four more team points, Luke Ira finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.73).
Carl Richey was Solon’s lone entrant in the 1,600-Meter run. He finished 36th following three heat races of 44 entrants.
Solon fielded two teams in the 4x100-meter relay. Solon’s team of Bo Black, Roeder, Ira and Christensen grabbed a team point for the Spartans with their sixth-place finish (44.95). The Spartans’ second team of Matt Folkerts, Scott, Wegmann and Harris finished 12th (48.09) in the 17-team event.
In the 4x200-meter relay, Solon again fielded a dual threat. Roeder, Coons, Durr and Christensen teamed for a sixth-place finish (1:34.65), and Wegmann, Greg Brandt, Adam Bock and Harris combined for 13th (1:45.49).
Another team point was garnered in relay action as Austin Kennedy, Grant Goldsberry, Trevor McGill, and Jake Schaeckenbach combined for a 3:36.18, good for sixth place. Krutzfeldt, Adam Smith, Bock and Brandt took 15th with a 3:51.75 effort.
Solon fielded only one team in the 4x800-meter relay. Krutzfeldt, Smith, Richey and Schaeckenbach finished eighth for Solon in the 15-team field.
Lee Hanus, Trevor Nelson, Goldsberry and Smith combined in the 1,600-sprint medley for a sixth-place finish (3:59.47).

Mark Sovers took to Twitter to comment, following the meet, “Great job Spartan Track at Hollingsworth Relays. Highlighted by the Wymer Family honor, proud and Humble to be part of it all. #wymerstrong”
