Spartan varsity boys track 4th at Tipton Early Bird Co-ed meet

TIPTON– In the 13-team field, the Solon varsity boys track team scored 64 points to take fourth behind West Branch (80), Anamosa (87), and Mount Vernon (102) at the Tipton Early Bird Co-ed Meet on Tuesday, March 29.
The Spartans managed 13 of their team points in the field portion, putting themselves in scoring positions for each event.
In the discus, Solon’s Jackson Walker took fifth with a 128-00 throw, scoring two points for the team. Ben Wilkerson finished 13th after a 111-10 throw, and Tyler Lindebaum grabbed 22nd with his 90-4.
Matt Roeder finished third in the high jump with a height of 5-10, scoring six team points.
Halston Durr scored four team points with a leap of 20-1 3/4 good for a fourth-place finish in the long jump. The Spartans’ Scott Storm finished 13th with his jump of 17-1 1/2.
Jacob Coons threw the shot put 43 1/2, good for sixth place and a team point. Luke Schaekenbach finished 15th (38-7 3/4) and Zach Wegmann nabbed 17th with a shot of 38-3 1/2.
The Solon’s tracksters mustered the rest of the 51 points.
In the 100-meter dash, “Nato” Christensen garnered 10 team points with his first-place finish after laying down an 11.56. Senior Keegan Hess made his track debut for the season with a 12.59 good for ninth place and Matt Folkerts finished 20th with his 13.36 in the field of 38 runners.
Austin Kennedy grabbed a team point for his sixth place in the 200-meter dash (24.81) while Isaac Vang finished 12th (25.88) and Matt Folkerts came in 21st (27.35) out of 35 competitors.
Keegan Holub collared six team points with his third-place finish (53.11) in the 400-meter run while Trevor McGill finished ninth (56.68) and Cole Paisely took 19th (59.60).
In the 800-meter run, Simon Düster finished seventh (2:18.58), good for a team point, while Holub finished 18th (2:39.21).
With 19 competitors in the 110-meter hurdles, Luke Ira finished third (16.08) and scored six team points, while Lee Hanus captured a ninth-place finish (18.41).
Adam Smith ran the 1,600-Meter run in 5:10.66, good for a 13th-place finish with Carl Richey close behind in 18th (5:30.52).
Düster was the only Solon runner in the 3,200-meter run and came home in ninth place with his 11:16.60.
It took four heats to sift through the 23 entries in the 4x100 meter relays, and the two Spartan squads shook out second and eighth. Bo Black, Christensen, Brandan Childs and Matt Roeder padded the team score with another eight points for second place. The Solon B team (47.00) consisted of Luke Ira, Spencer Wegmann, Payton Bandy and Jack Stahle.
With 26 groups scheduled to compete in the 4x200-meter relay, and five relay teams disqualified, the Solon Spartans were able to grab second and 17th. Christensen, Bo Black, Coons, and Roeder nabbed second with a 1:35.25 time. The 17th-place team of Spencer Wegmann, Bandy, Storm Scott and Kendrick Harris finished with a time of 1:44.32.
The Spartans fielded only one team in the 4x400-meter relay, but the team added four points to the team total. Taking fourth place (3:38.92) were Trevor McGill, Austin Kennedy, Grant Goldsberry and Luke Schaeckenbach.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Schaekenbach, Adam Smith, Carl Richey and Ben Krutzfeldt grabbed a point for their 7th-place finish (9:07.84).
Four heats of the shuttle hurdle relay saw Solon hurdlers Black, Lee Hanus, Ira and Christensen post a 1:02.43, good enough for third place.
Solon had two entries in the 1,600-distance medley relay. The team of Hess, Goldsberry, McGill and Tanner Larkey saw early success building a lead, but faded in the late stages to 14th place (4:17.37). The second team of Hunter Kula, Adam Bock, Scott, and Paisely fell victim to disqualification.
The final results for the varsity boys competition saw Mount Vernon top the scoring with 102 team points. Anamosa was second with 87, West Branch came in third scoring 80 and Solon ended the evening with 64 points. Regina (57), Cascade (47), Clear Creek Amana (38), Central DeWitt (22), Wilton (16), Tipton(15), Beckman (11), North Cedar (11) and Midland (8) rounded out the field.
The Spartan boys travel on Saturday, April 9, to the Iowa City West High Hollingsworth Relays meet with a scheduled start of 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, sees the Spartan boys heading to Iowa Valley for a scheduled start of 4:45 p.m., and then it is off to Davenport on Thursday, April 14, for the Davenport North Coed Meet at Brady Street Stadium with a scheduled 4 p.m. start. The Spartans host the Solon Denny Gruber Co-ed Invitational on Tuesday, April 19, at Spartan Stadium with a 4:30 p.m. start.
