Solon wrestlers take first at Regina

SOLON– Solon Head Wrestling Coach Blake Williams didn’t want Thursday’s results to carry over to Saturday.
The Spartan varsity wrestlers were handed a convincing 48-23 loss by West Delaware at home Dec. 14.
“Although it was a disappointing night, the message to the team was learn from it and to put it behind us,” Williams said. “It is a quick turnaround Saturday.”
The team responded with an overwhelming win at the 14-team Regina Invitational Dec. 16.
Solon took first place with 212.5 points, 50 points ahead of Mount Pleasant in second. The Spartans placed eight wrestlers in the finals and came away with five champions.
Zeb Gnida (120 pounds), Zack Bevans (152), Jax Flynn (160), Mike Hoyle (182), and Tyler Linderbaum (285) took titles, while Christian Haight (132), Caleb Ebert (145) and Zach Wegmann (220) finished second.
“I thought our guys wrestled with more urgency and aggressively than they did Thursday,” Williams said.
It was the first time the Spartans had attended the tournament.
“Mike Hoyle, Jax Flyyn, and Zack Bevans were dominant in their weight classes,” Williams said, “while Tyler Linderbaum avenged a loss from last year’s district final and Zeb Gnida beat a very tough wrestler from Tipton.”
Linderbaum won by fall (2:42) over Jacen Petersen of Davenport West in the semifinal and came away with a 2-1 tie-breaker over Fairfield’s Brendon Lunsford in the final.
Gnida pinned Tucker Bright of Columbus/ Winfield-Mt. Union in 1:24 to advance to the final where he won in overtime (12-7) against Tipton’s Ben Emrich.
“Putting eight guys in the finals and having five champions was a good showing,” Williams said. “All the guys we brought to the tournament placed in the top six as well.”
Aidan Dall placed third at 126 pounds, while Andy Brokaw (138) and Adam Bock (195) took fifth. Seamus Poynton (170) was sixth.
“That is very important in tournaments,” Williams said. “If each wrestler can score team points, your odds of winning a tournament increase.”
Points were a problem against West Delaware in the Dec. 14 dual meet.
Solon won all of its matches by fall, but only Hoyle, Linderbaum, Gnida and Flynn would post victories.
Despite a brief 6-3 lead, the Spartans quickly fell in a hole, dropping four of five matches and losing a point to unsportsmanlike conduct.
“We knew West Delaware had a very good, young team,” Williams noted. “Going into the meet we knew we would have to win some matches that maybe were toss-ups or not favored in to have a chance.”
Hoyle pinned West Delaware’s Ben Petlon in 92 seconds, while Linderbaum dropped Carson Petlon three seconds quicker. Gnida pinned Reilly Dolan (1:24) after two quick takedowns, and Flynn took down Tristan Voelker in 3:50.
West Delaware racked up six pins and four decisions.
Two of those decisions were close matches, and came when the Spartans were still within striking distance.
After Gnida’s pin made it 29-17 in favor of the visitors, Dall fell 1-0 after holding West Delaware’s Alex Maury scoreless into the third period, and Haight lost an 8-5 match with ranked opponent Ryan Phillips.
“Credit to West Delaware, they outwrestled and out-fought us,” Williams said. “As coaches, we never stress winning a meet. Rather, each individual going out and competing as hard as they can. Tonight, we did not have that consistent fight from all of our guys.”
Solon will close out 2017 hosting the Solon Duals with Keokuk, Vinton-Shellsburg and PCM Thursday, Dec. 21, beginning at 4 p.m. at Solon High School.
