MT. VERNON– It was stiff competition for the Solon varsity softball team.
The Lady Spartans, No. 6 in the final Class 3A rankings released July 3 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, played three of their last four regular-season games against top-15 opponents in three different classes.
After splitting at home with Western Dubuque June 26, Solon traveled up Highway 1 to match up with the No. 8 (3A) Mount Vernon Mustangs June 28 and came away with a convincing 8-1 win.
Senior Bryn Hanrahan broke open a 4-1 game with a two-RBI double in the seventh inning and subsequently scored on a single by senior Jess Heick.
Hanrahan led the team with four hits (including two doubles) and four RBI. Heick and senior Tara Lance each had three stolen bases, while sophomore Taylor Moore drew three walks. Sophomore Taylor Ryan and freshman Jadyn Jeter each added a double.
Freshman Kayla West struck out four and walked one while allowing a single earned run on five hits over seven innings for the win.
Solon took the lead with two runs in the second inning and stayed on top the rest of the way, adding insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings before a four-run seventh.
Two days later it was off for Ottumwa and a powerhouse tournament where the Lady Spartans dropped a slugfest to No. 3 (4A) Fairfield, 11-7, and fell to No. 14 (5A) Southeast Polk, 5-1.
Solon led Fairfield 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Trojans knicked up starting pitcher McKenna Miller for five runs for a 6-3 lead.
The Lady Spartans cut into the lead with two runs in the fifth, and tied it 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning, but Fairfield responded with five runs in the bottom half against West for the win.
Solon made the most of 10 hits, swiping five bases and drawing five walks. Ryan went 3-4 with an RBI, a stolen base and a walk, while Lance was 2-4 with an RBI.
West also took the loss against Southeast Polk, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out two.
Southeast Polk jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and the Lady Spartans couldn’t get on the board until junior Madison Rogers knocked in Heick in the top of the sixth inning.
Hanrahan (three) and Ryan (two) accounted for five of Solon’s seven hits. Moore and Jeter had the other two.
The Lady Spartans rebounded Saturday, July 1, against Roland Story with 10 runs in the first inning and a 12-3 win to wrap up their play in Ottumwa.
Heick was 2-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. Miller was 3-4 with a double and three RBI, while Rogers was 3-4 with two RBI. Hanrahan and Ryan each had two stolen bases.
West captured the win, allowing three unearned runs on three hits.
Solon ended the regular season with a 27-12 record and were scheduled to host the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks in a Region 7 quarterfinal Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. The winner advances to face either PCM or Chariton Friday, July 7, in Solon, with the final and a berth in the state tournament decided Monday, July 10, at the home of the highest remaining seed. Albia, Central Decatur, Clarke and Centerville occupy the other side of the bracket.
