Solon takes two from Williamsburg

SOLON– Two Solon pitchers threw gems, and the Spartans made the most of a handful of hits to squeeze a doubleheader sweep out of visiting Williamsburg July 1.
Cam Miller struck out 13 and walked two in a 2-0 shutout, and Lucas Walker allowed a single earned run while striking out seven and walking four in a 4-1 win.
Solon manufactured both of its runs in the first inning of the opener. Chris McSweeney had two of the Spartans’ four hits, with the others belonging to Jax Flynn and Ryan Geistkemper (a double). Flynn had the lone RBI for Solon’s offense.
The Spartans took a first-inning lead in the nightcap as well, adding a run in the second and two in the fourth. Jackson Pipolo was 3-3 with a triple, two stolen bases and two runs scored.
“Jackson has come on in the last couple weeks after a rough start,” noted Solon Head Coach Keith McSweeney. “He's an athletic player, very important for us defensively and on the base paths, and gives our lineup some needed gap power when he's on.”
Miller added a double and two RBI, while Nolan Pattison accounted for the Spartans’ only other hit.
Offense was not a problem for either team during two-and-a-half innings of play between Solon and Cedar Rapids Xavier July 2 in Cedar Rapids.
The game was postponed with Xavier holding an 8-7 lead.
A rescheduled home doubleheader against Vinton-Shellsburg July 3 was also rained out, but the two teams will try one more time Thursday, July 11.
