Solon splits with Marion, sweeps struggling Beckman

Sprague pitches one-hitter against Indians

SOLON– The Lady Spartans put their offense in gear against a pair of WaMaC East softball opponents last week.
Solon split with Marion on the road June 29 then swept a pair from Beckman Catholic July 1 at home, cranking out 51 hits over the four-game span.
The Lady Spartans fell 10-3 to the Indians in the first game at Marion, but still managed 10 hits, all singles, off starter Megan Kessens. Solon exploded for 11 hits, including two home runs, in the nightcap for a 12-0 victory.
The bats were even more potent when five-win Beckman came calling two days later in Solon. The Lady Spartans put up 15 hits in each game and took both from the Blazers, 15-5 and 12-2.
Leading the charge in the two doubleheaders were sophomore Ava Stebral and junior Sarah Heick, each with seven RBI over the four games.
Stebral homered in the 12-0 Marion win and the 15-5 Beckman victory, while Heick did her damage against the Trailblazers, going 5-8 with three doubles during the doubleheader.
Solon posted .577 and .517 batting averages against Beckman.
In the opener at Marion, the Lady Spartans put up a .345 average, but could only manage three runs. The Indians broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning, then blew the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Solon mounted a comeback with two runs in the top of the sixth, but fell short, 10-3.
Sophomore Carly Ellison and incoming freshman Kendall Jensen combined on the mound in the loss. Ellison allowed 10 runs (six earned) on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Jensen threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing no hits while striking out one.
Senior Madison Sprague pitched a one-hitter in the 12-0 nightcap, striking out three without issuing a walk.
The Lady Spartans took control over the Indians early with six runs in the second inning, and added to the lead in each of the next three innings to run away with the win.
In the opener against Beckman, Solon put up five runs in the first two innings but the Blazers tied it in the top of the fourth. The Lady Spartans posted seven runs in the home half and added three more in the sixth to seal the 15-5 win.
Ellison took the win, allowing five earned runs on four hits over five innings.
Sprague allowed two earned runs on nine hits going the distance in the second game, striking out three and walking two.
Solon took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, and broke open a 4-2 game in the fifth with five runs. Three more scores in the sixth resulted in the 12-2 final.
The Lady Spartans finished the four-game span with a 14-6 record.
