Solon boys third at Marengo, fourth at Jesse Day Relays

DAVENPORT– Solon’s boys notched two solid track and field performances last week, taking third place at the Ruth Ahrens Invitational in Marengo and fourth place at the mixed-school Jesse Day Co-Ed Relays in Davenport.
Tuesday, April 21, the Spartans will host the Denny Gruber Relays, named in honor of longtime head boys track coach and teacher Denny Gruber. On Friday and Saturday, several members of the team (yet to be determined) will participate at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines. WaMaC, district, and state meets will be held in mid-May.
At Marengo April 14, first-place finishes by Emilio Villagrana in the long jump (20 feet, 8.5 inches) and Connor Ham in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.35) and a bevy of seconds and thirds fueled the Spartans to third place.
Williamsburg won the meet with 134 points, while Vinton-Shellsburg slipped just ahead of Solon’s 112.5 points with 116 for second. Regina (87), Clear Creek Amana (72) and Benton Community (34) rounded out the scoring.
Second-place points came from Kolby Melsha in the discus (129 feet, 5 inches), Spencer Lawson in the 200-meter dash (24.01), the 4x800-meter Relay of Zach Kienholz, Trevor Yahr, Ben Krutzfeldt and Jake Schaekenbach (8:51.81), the shuttle hurdle relay consisting of Luke Ira, Josh Prybil, Isaac Vang and Bo Black (1:05.16) and the distance medley relay of Preston Miller, Trevor McGill, Grant Goldsberry and Ben Krutzfeldt (4:01.67).
Both the 4x100 relay (Black, Matt Roeder, Brandan Childs, Ham, 44.45) and the 4x400 relay (Yahr, Kienholz, Villagrana and Schaekenbach, 3:37.21) turned in third place showings, as did Roeder in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), Zach Nunemaker (20 feet, 6.5 inches) in the long jump, Ira in the 110-meter hurdles (16.40) and Adam Smith in the 1,600-meter run (5:06.61)

Jack Stahle finished fifth in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and Prybil sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.85) to conclude Solon’s scoring.

Second-place performances by Luke Ira in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.05) and Tanner Wymer in the discus (155 feet, 9 inches) were the best of the day for the Spartans at the Jesse Day Co-Ed Relays April 16 at the Brady Street Stadium in Davenport.
Facing mostly bigger schools, Solon came out in the middle of the pack with a fourth-place finish overall. North Scott won the meet with 146.5 points, while Bettendorf (131) and Davenport West (103.5) sewed up the other top spots. Solon’s 90 points put the Spartans ahead of Clinton (70), Davenport Central (62), Davenport North (55) and Davenport Assumption (34).
Solon finished third three times, with Zach Nunemaker in the long jump (21 feet, six inches), Ben Krutzfeldt in the 1,600-meter run (4:58.22) and the distance medley relay of Spencer Lawson, Grant Goldsberry, Zach Kienholz, Jake Schaekenbach (3:51.10) providing precious points.
