OSKALOOSA– Solon’s Cam Miller struck out eight and walked one against Pella.
The opposing team’s five pitchers combined for eight walks and two strikeouts.
The Spartan varsity baseball team cruised past the Dutch 13-0 in a Class 3A Substate 6 semifinal July 19 in Oskaloosa.
“Cam pitched really well, and had all of his pitches working,” Solon Head Coach Keith McSweeney said. “When they did square him up our outfielders tracked it down.”
McSweeney said the biggest play of the game probably occurred in the third inning when Solon was already up 4-0.
“They got the leadoff on base to start the inning and their two-hole hitter hit the ball hard and it appeared that it would get over Jackson Pipolo's head in center,” McSweeney said. “But he made a great play tracking it down and doubled off the runner at first who assumed it would drop. The run would have scored there and it would have been 4-1 with a guy on second and momentum shifting some... but those types of plays can change a game.”
As it turned out, Pella managed to move only one runner to second base the entire game, in the first inning on a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt, he said.
“But otherwise, Cam controlled their lineup the entire game,” he noted.
The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on three more runs in the second and one in the third.
Solon broke the game wide open with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“Their pitchers had some control issues the entire inning, but when they threw strikes, we were on it,” McSweeney said.
Pipolo and Jax Flynn had RBI doubles and Adam Bock, back in the lineup, hit a three-run home run to cap the scoring.
“Adam's return was great for our team as he is a stabilizing force in our dugout and on the field,” the coach noted. “He's been with us for four years and that's really difficult to replicate. He catches a really good game, primarily as a receiver, and he understands all our pitchers really well. His home run was a line-drive bullet over the left-center field fence. We were up 10-0 at the time, but it was great to see him get his first of the year. I know he thought he would have more of those this year, but he's been great for us all year, and certainly over the last four years. I can't say enough about how much it meant to our guys that he made the sacrifice to come back. Our program is going to miss Adam Bock.”
Miller allowed only two hits in the five-inning shutout.
Nolan Pattison and Flynn each had two hits for the Spartans. Pattison had two RBI and Flynn scored three times. Flynn, Pipolo and Ryan Geistkemper had doubles.
The win moved Solon to 21-17. The Spartans advanced to a Substate 6 District 12 final against Oskaloosa in Oskaloosa July 22. The winner faces the District 11 champion Wednesday, July 24, at the site of the highest remaining seed with a berth in the state baseball tournament at stake.
The state tournament is set for Friday, July 26, through Saturday, Aug. 3, at Principal Park in Des Moines. Class 3A play starts on Tuesday, July 30, with the semifinal games set for Friday, Aug. 2. The 3A championship is set for Saturday, Aug. 3, at 4:30 p.m.
