NORTH LIBERTY– The schedules for the 2020 high school baseball and softball seasons were released by the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) and WaMaC Conference, and set the stage for a short campaign for the Liberty High Lightning and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers.
On Wednesday, May 20, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the summer sports season could proceed and approved the reopening of school facilities beginning on Monday, June 1.
In response, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) and Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) issued a joint statement stating the first contests may begin on Monday, June 15
The MVC released its schedules on Wednesday, May 27, noting sophomore and varsity baseball, and varsity softball will be played while lower level softball and baseball, not governed by the MVC, will have their schedules released by the individual leagues. Liberty’s first contests will be on Tuesday, June 16, with the baseball team traveling to City High for junior varsity (JV) and varsity games, while the softball team heads to Western Dubuque, in Epworth, for a doubleheader.
The Bolts play their first true home games on Thursday, June 18, with the boys entertaining Cedar Rapids Washington in a JV/varsity duo, while the girls face City High in a doubleheader. Liberty utilized Mount Mercy University’s facilities last year while its diamonds were under construction.
The WaMaC Conference also met Wednesday, May 27, and CCA Activities Director Kurt Ronnfeldt said the conference decided to play out the original schedule, starting on June 15.
“WaMaC schools have worked together to add a few more dates, especially in softball with the season being extended one week,” Ronnfeldt said.
The conference will not have a champion in baseball or softball for 2020, he added.
The WaMaC will name All-Conference teams, however. CCA will also play lower level games this season.
The Creek Boys and Creek Girls open the season on the road at Vinton-Shellsburg on June 15 with doubleheaders for both. The first home games will be Monday, June 22, with Benton Community visiting the baseball team for a doubleheader, in Tiffin, and the softball team in Oxford, also a doubleheader.
The postseason begins with softball regional games on Monday, July 13, and the 2020 state championships are set for Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, at Rogers Sports Complex, in Fort Dodge. Baseball’s postseason starts up on Thursday, July 9, with the state championships taking place Friday, July 24, through Saturday, Aug. 1, at Principal Park, in Des Moines.
On Tuesday, May 26, the IHSAA and IGHSAU released “Guidance and FAQs” for baseball and softball in line with guidelines set forth by the Governor’s Office, the Iowa Department of Education (DoE), and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH).
Per the guidelines, players and coaches should have their temperature checked at home prior to attending practice or a game, if their temperature reading is 100.3 or above, they should not attend. Likewise, spectators should also have their temperature taken at home and remain at home if it is 100.3 or higher.
DoE and IDPH guidelines state schools must limit the use of bleachers for fans, and encourage fans to bring their own chairs, or stand practicing social distancing between families.
Masks, per the IDPH and DoE, are not required for players, umpires, coaches or spectators.
Concession stands are not permitted to be open this season.
“We are going to do our best to follow the recommendations set forth by the IHSAA, IGHSAU and Department of Education,” Ronnfeldt said. “We will expect spectators to practice social distancing at games. Players will follow guidelines. More info will continue to be provided as more questions are asked. It’s a work in progress and our district leadership is meeting regularly to make sure we provide a positive and safe experience for our kids this summer.”
