TIFFIN — The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers met the Mustangs of Mt. Vernon in varsity baseball doubleheader action last Wednesday evening in the cold and rain. Coach Andrew Davis’ bunch picked up a win while also posting yet another loss. The Mustangs embarrassed the Clippers 11-3 in the opener, scoring one run in the top of the second inning before a devastating eight-run campaign in the fifth. Mt. Vernon’s final pair of runs came in the sixth. Mt. Vernon posted 14 hits and four errors in the game.
CCA’s runs all came in the bottom of the third inning in a six-hit, three error effort. Evan Hergert, Dillon Villhauer and Nile Eckermann all singled with two outs on the board. Tyler Schulte came to the plate and belted out a two-run double scoring Hergert and Villhauer. A Zach Volk single brought in Eckermann and almost scored Schulte, who was gunned down at home plate.
Schulte took the loss throwing for 4 and one-third innings giving up nine runs (six earned), nine hits and striking out three. Anderson relieved Schulte for 2.7 innings of work and gave up two earned runs and five hits. Game two
The Clippers reloaded for the nightcap and a 6-4 victory.
A three-run first inning rallied Clippers, followed by one in the bottom of the third and two in the fifth. The Mustangs were held scoreless until a one-run fourth inning. Mt. Vernon tried a late comeback in the top of the seventh, mustering three runs. The Mustangs put up two hits and one error to CCA’s nine hits and two errors.
Villhauer led off for the Clippers in the bottom of the first inning with a single, and was followed by Eckermann who also got a base hit. Schulte brought the boys home with a two-RBI single, advanced himself on a wild pitch, but was caught between second and third base. Volk took advantage of the breezy conditions and posted a solo home run to give the Clippers the 3-0 lead.
In the third, Schulte got the second CCA homer of the night in a one-hit, one-run inning. The fifth inning opened for the Clippers with Hergert taking a stroll to first base and advancing on a Villhauer single. A Mustang error kept the pair moving for an extra base each. Eckermann brought them home with a two-RBI single.
The split moved the Clippers to a 6-12 record overall, 6-9 in the WaMaC.
