One game closer to state

Withrow’s 25 points power CCA past Keokuk in 76-66 substate win

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys came a step closer to following the girls to the state basketball tournament as they conquered the Chiefs of Keokuk Thursday, Feb. 27, in a Class 3A Substate 5 semifinal game at home.
The Clippers topped the Chiefs 76-66 and advanced to a substate final on Wednesday, March 4, (after this edition’s deadline) against Davenport Assumption in Muscatine.
The Creek Boys trailed 16-15 after the first quarter but surged to a 32-28 halftime advantage, and led 47-44 going into the final period. CCA was leading 69-56 in the fourth when the Chiefs drained back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to seven points at 69-62 with one minute remaining.
Nick O’Connor, Tyler Schrepfer and Christian Withrow nailed seven consecutive free throws in that final minute for the win.
Withrow led the Clippers with 25 points while Schrepfer contributed 15. Mike Potter added 14 and T.J. Bollers contributed a dozen.
The win improved CCA’s record to 18-5 while the Chiefs ended at 16-8.
The 2020 Boys State Basketball Tournament runs from Monday, March 9, through Friday, March 13, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Class 3A quarterfinals are on Tuesday, March 10, at 11:15 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. with the semifinals set for Thursday, March 12, at 2 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. The 3A Consolation Game is at 10:20 a.m. on Friday with the Championship Game at 6:35 p.m.
