North Liberty Community Pantry’s Annual Turkey Trot goes virtual

NORTH LIBERTY– Each year hundreds of runners compete in the North Liberty Turkey Trot to raise funds for the North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) during its “Thanksgiving In July” celebration. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these funds are needed now more than ever, but the Pantry wants to keep the community safe. “We did not feel right having 300-plus sweaty runners gather in Centennial Park,” said NLCP Executive Director Kaila Rome. “Organizing such a large event takes many hours of staff and volunteer time. We need all that time to focus on serving our community.”
The Pantry has decided to make this year’s event virtual. All registration fees are $20 per runner. Add a T-shirt for $10 or headband for $8, and it will be shipped directly to your home. Runners will be able to choose their own route, run on their own time, and any day throughout July. “We wanted to make it as easy as possible” said NLCP Marketing and Development Coordinator Jake Putnam.
The 2020 Virtual Turkey Trot is presented by GreenState Credit Union. Thanks to their sponsorship, the community can safely run apart, together. Runners will be able to compete in new contests this year, including a costume contest, North Liberty-based landmark scavenger hunt, and a peer-to-peer fundraising competition.
