No. 9 Wahawks overpower the Lightning’s ladies, 64-24

NORTH LIBERTY– The Waterloo West Wahawks, the No. 9 varsity girls’ team in Class 5A per Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) Thursday, Jan. 2, weekly rankings, overpowered the Liberty High Lightning Friday, Jan. 3, at Liberty. West defeated the “Bolts” 64-26, improving to 8-1 and dropping un-ranked Liberty to 1-7.
The Wahawks got off to a 20-5 start in the first quarter and held a commanding 43-17 halftime advantage. The second period would prove to be Liberty’s best of the night with a 12-point effort. West outscored Liberty 15-6 in the third to carry a 58-23 lead into the final quarter. While the Wahawks were held to only six points, the Bolts were equally constrained and mustered only three points in the period.
Ava Meyer, a freshman, led Liberty with a seven-point night with six from senior Isabel Smith, and five from senior Sam McPherson. Meyer also led the Lightning on the boards with seven rebounds.
Liberty travels to Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic High School on Friday, Jan. 7, with a 7:30 p.m. varsity start. The Saints were ranked No. 8 in Class 4A in the IGHSAU’s rankings and improved to 5-3 with a Saturday, Jan. 4, win over Iowa City West High. Cedar Falls’ Tigers visit the Bolts on Tuesday, Jan. 14, with a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip-off, and City High, the No. 1 team in 5A, visits for a girl-boy doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 17 with the girl’s game set for 6 p.m., and the boys to follow at 7:30 p.m.
