No. 1 Bobcats take two from the Creek Girls

Benton Community wins, 9-5 and 14-8

North Liberty Leader
OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s varsity softball team became the latest victims of number one (in Class 4A per the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s June 22 weekly rankings) Benton Community Bobcats on Wednesday, June 28, at home. Benton took the opener, 9-5, and blasted the Clippers, 14-8, in the nightcap.
Benton started game one with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, but the Creek Girls took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. The lead was short-lived however, the Bobcats scored two runs in the second and two more in the fourth.
CCA found a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth making it 6-5 for the Bobcats. Hopes of pulling off an upset were quenched by a scoreless sixth inning and three Benton runs in the top of the seventh.
Karsyn Stratton (two), Ainsley Schrock (two) and Claire Navara produced the Creek Girls’ five hits with four RBI from Schrock. Raina Henze took the loss, going the distance in the circle. Henze gave up 13 hits and nine runs (six earned), walked two and struck out four.
The Bobcats took another early lead, this time with four runs in the top of the second inning of the nightcap, with an additional run in the third to put the Creek Girls in a 5-0 hole.
CCA mustered one run in the bottom of the fourth, rallied back with three in the fifth and again watched hopes of an upset fade.
Benton scored three runs in the sixth to hold an 8-4 lead.
The Creek Girls tied with a four-run effort in the bottom of the sixth thanks to RBI singles from Stratton, Navara and Schrock, but a six-run deluge in the top of the seventh gave the Bobcats the final edge.
Stratton led the Clippers at the plate with four hits, Navara knocked out three hits with four RBI and Schrock had a pair of hits and two RBI. The balance of CCA’s 14 hits came from Riley Hennes, Abbi Kinnaird, Katie Pitlick, Danielle Wnek and Abby Crow (all one hit each).
Peyton Grafft was charged with the loss after going the distance. Grafft gave up 18 hits and 14 earned runs with one walk and one strike out.
The Creek Girls fell to 12-26, while Benton improved to 30-5.
