NL man threatens to set himself on fire, charged with arson and domestic abuse

NORTH LIBERTY– According to a release issued by the City of North Liberty Telecommunications Department, officers of the North Liberty Police Department were dispatched to 254 Golfview Ct., North Liberty, in reference to a domestic disturbance on Dec. 15, around 9:15 p.m. Through the investigation, officers learned that Fernando Maldonado, age 38, (AKA Javier T. Martinez, age 44) had poured gasoline on himself. Maldonado threatened to light himself on fire, began flicking a lighter, and threatened to harm his family while inside the residence.  Maldonado was transported to the hospital for the ingestion of gasoline and was released Tuesday.  No other injuries were reported.  
Maldonado was transported to jail and charged with Arson 1st Degree (a Class B felony), Domestic Abuse Assault with the display or use of a weapon (an aggravated misdemeanor) and two counts of Child Endangerment (an aggravated misdemeanor).
The North Liberty Police Department was assisted by the North Liberty Fire Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Department of Corrections High Risk Unit and the Johnson County Attorney’s Office.  
The charges filed in this case are merely accusations.  The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
