Mustangs slip past Lightning in OT

Liberty falls, 69-66, to Dubuque Hempstead

DUBUQUE– The Liberty High varsity boys’ basketball team came close, very close, to upsetting the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Hempstead. Instead, the Mustangs escaped, 69-66, in overtime to improve to 11-3 while dropping the Bolts to 6-6.
The Lightning trailed, 21-20, at the end of the first quarter, but lit up the scoreboard for a 39-33 halftime advantage. Liberty still led, 50-47, going into the fourth quarter. But, a series of unfortunate happenings unfolded, as Coach Stu Ordman described. The Bolts had a shot at the win at the end of regulation play, with the game tied, but a traveling violation turned the ball over to Hempstead. With five seconds left, Liberty made a stop leading to overtime.
“In OT, Liberty had (an) open three, down two, with four seconds left, but it rimmed out,” Ordman said. “Liberty also had a half court three to tie in OT, but fell short. Great effort. Showed improvement.”
Andre Brandon led Liberty with a 22-point effort, while Kelby Telander contributed 17 points. Ira Hazeltine, Telander, and Ben Houselog drained one three-pointer apiece in the contest.
