Muskies upset Trojans under threatening skies

IOWA CITY– Lightning in the western sky ended a non-conference varsity contest between the Iowa City West High Trojans and the Muscatine Muskies Wednesday, June 28, in Iowa City.
The Muskies took the six-inning game, 6-3, after scoring one run in the top of the first inning and two in the second.
The Trojans put up a run in the bottom of the second when Lucas Karwal grounded out allowing a run to score, while a passed ball brought in the second Trojan, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
West High had a chance to take the lead, with the bases loaded in the third, but were unable to capitalize on their good fortune.
The Muskies scored in the top of the fifth on a Trojan error to make it 4-2.
Alex Granner put up a sacrifice fly ball in the bottom of the fifth making it 4-3, but a two-run homer by the Muskies in the sixth sealed West High’s fate as lightning was spotted at the end of the sixth and the game was called.
Izaya Ono-Fullard had the Trojans’ only hit, while Jason Strunk walked twice, stole four bases and scored two runs.
Tony Comellas was charged with the loss after three innings on the mound where he gave up four hits and three earned runs. Comellas walked three and struck out one.
Tyler Stern pitched one inning giving up three hits and two earned runs, while Clay Warren threw one inning giving up one hit.
The loss dipped the Trojans to 23-7, while the Muskies improved to 15-13.
