NORTH LIBERTY– A pair of lucky breaks bounced Liberty High’s way in the fourth quarter of a varsity football game against Davenport Assumption Catholic Friday, Oct. 18, at Liberty.
The Lightning upset the Knights 14-7 in a game with potential playoff ramifications.
Liberty took the opening kick-off as the windy night began, and burned up the majority of the first quarter in a steady ground assault as they churned closer and closer to the Knights’ end zone. Max Tafolla dove into the end zone on a first and goal with 36.4 seconds remaining in the period. Ryan Nugent booted the extra point kick through the uprights, and the Lightning led, 7-0.
Assumption’s defense foiled a Liberty drive late in the second quarter as a Nugent field goal kick was blocked with 1:51 remaining. The Knights recovered the ball, but the half ended with the Lightning still ahead 7-0.
The Knights scored on a short hop across the goal line with 4:25 left in the third quarter and tied with a successful point-after kick.
The game was still knotted at 7-7 in the fourth quarter when the Bolts were forced to punt, and caught their first big break of the night. Assumption bobbled the punt return, which was picked up by Liberty’s Kaleb Williams for first and 10 on the Knights’ 28-yard line. Another long ground drive ensued for the Bolts, which was topped off by Tafolla diving across the goal line for the second time. Nugent’s point-after kick was good and the Lightning had a 14-7 lead with 3:29 left in the ballgame.
Liberty’s second big break came mere seconds later as Williams intercepted an Assumption pass for a first and 10 on the Knights’ 34-yard line. The final drive of the game for the Bolts consisted of quarterback Drake Woody taking a knee through the final minute and a half.
Liberty improved to 6-2 overall, and 3-1 in Class 3A District 5 while Assumption dipped to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the eighth week of the regular season. North Scott remained undefeated in the district at 4-0 and improved to 7-1 as it defeated Clear Creek Amana (CCA) 35-7 at home.
Liberty will face winless Clinton Friday, Oct. 25, at home to close out the regular season while CCA will take on Central DeWitt with both teams hoping for one more district win this season. The Clippers and the Sabers are 1-3 in the district. North Scott and Assumption will tangle on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Davenport. A win moves the Lancers to 5-0 and the district championship.
