Liberty defeats Dubuque Hempstead, improves to 22-1

NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High varsity volleyball team improved to 22-1 with a nine-match winning streak, sweeping Dubuque Hempstead Tuesday, Oct. 8, at home. The Lightning’s 3-0 win started with a 25-19 first-set victory, and was followed by 25-15 and 25-22 wins.
Freshman Cassidy Hartmann led the Bolts with 11 kills, while fellow frosh Shelby Kimm produced nine.
Liberty competes in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Cedar Rapids Prairie starting at 9 a.m.
The Bolts are in Class 5A Region 7 and begin their quest to the U.S. Cellular Center, and perhaps the first state championship in program history, with a semifinal match against Muscatine on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at home, at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the regional final on Monday, Nov. 4, at the highest-remaining team’s site. Linn-Mar and Dubuque Senior clash in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, Oct. 23, with the winner taking on Hempstead on Oct. 29. Liberty was the No. 2 team in Class 5A, while Hempstead was ranked 14th in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Thursday, Oct. 3, rankings while Linn-Mar, Senior and Muscatine were unranked.
