Liberty High volleyball opens 2019 with 3-2 win Cedar Rapids Xavier

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Liberty High varsity volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a confidence-boosting win over the Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints.
Liberty defeated Xavier, 3-2 (20-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-12, 16-14), knocking off the No. 2 team in Class 4A per the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Monday, Aug. 26, preseason rankings. The Bolts entered the season ranked ninth in Class 5A.
Liberty trailed, 14-6, in the first set before going on a 5-0 run with kills from Addie Schmierer, Shelby Kimm, LeeAnn Potter and Sam Harvey, with a block from Kimm as well. Xavier kept the Lightning at bay however, taking the set, 25-20.
Liberty came out reenergized for the second set, leading, 20-12, at one point with a Kimm kill, and sending the Saints to the sideline for a timeout. The Bolts took the set, 25-16, and tied the match 1-1. The momentum shifted in the third set as Liberty quickly found themselves down, 8-2, and trailed, 20-10, before Cassidy Hartman tipped the ball over the net for a point. The Saints cruised to the 25-15 set win and a 2-1 lead.
The Bolts ran up a 10-3 lead in the fourth set with a Potter ace serve making it 12-4. A Potter kill made it 20-10 on the way to a 25-12 win and a 2-2 tie for the match.
The tie-breaking fifth set had the atmosphere of a regional final set, both squads battled for every point. A Potter kill made it 5-3 and Liberty went ahead 8-4 before a Saints timeout. The Lightning led, 10-5, before the Saints battled back to a one-point deficit, trailing Liberty, 10-9. Xavier tied the set, 13-13, prompting Liberty Head Coach Randy Dolson to call a timeout to regroup the Bolts. Liberty held the Saints and took the set, 16-14, and the match, 3-2, for a 1-0 record on the season.
Kimm, a freshman, led Liberty with a dozen kills while Potter, a senior, and Cassidy Hartman, freshman, put up nine apiece. Hailey Hested, a junior, made three ace serves, Schmierer, a junior, came up with 24 digs, and Hested and Rylee Fay, a senior, put up 22 assists each. Lauren Roman, a junior, and Potter led defensively with three blocks each.
The Bolts are home Tuesday, Sept. 10, as Cedar Rapids Kennedy visits. Sophomores and junior varsity will go at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity action starting around 7 p.m. Liberty competes in Iowa City West High’s tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at 9 a.m. with Ankeny, Beckman, CCA, Columbus Catholic, Des Moines Hoover, Dowling Catholic, Mount Vernon, CR Prairie, Dubuque Wahlert Catholic and CR Washington participating in addition to the Lightning and the Women of Troy.
