Lightning scorches the Prairie Hawks with 10-run inning

Liberty advances to regional final with 12-0 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity softball team came one game closer to a potential first-ever state tournament appearance Saturday, July 18, in an inter-Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) duel as the Valley Division Lightning faced the Mississippi Division Prairie Hawks of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
The Bolts scorched the birds 12-0 in the Class 5A regional semifinal game, at home, and advanced to a regional final against Valley Division foe Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
The Bolts and Hawks were both held scoreless through two innings when the Lightning exploded in a 10-run fury in the bottom of the third inning. Two more Liberty runs plated in the fourth with the game ending early on the mercy rule.
Kylie Hamers, a freshman, belted out a two-run home run in the contest with Brylee Klosterman, Ashlyn Geasland, Kennedy Daugherty and Raquel Trolliet smacking out a double each. Haley Napoli had a pair of singles as well.
Kara Maiers threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.
The Prairie Hawks put away their bats for the season with a 12-8 record overall while the Bolts improved to 17-8 ahead of the Tuesday, July 21, battle with the Cougars (after this edition’s deadline). Kennedy brings a 22-1 overall record and 14-0 division record (top of the division) to the battle, as well as being ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Prairie was ranked No. 15 while Liberty was un-ranked.
The regional final winner advances to the 2020 State Softball Tournament Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, in Fort Dodge.
