Lightning hopes to surprise on the links

2018 Liberty High girls golf team preview

NORTH LIBERTY– Add girls golf to the list of athletic programs entering a debut season at Liberty High School in North Liberty. The Lightning, coached by Brian Wernimont (head) and Sean McCarty, started the 2018 season Monday, March 26, with an away meet at the Kalona Country Club against Mid-Prairie and Iowa City Regina.
Neely Maurus (freshman) had the low score for Liberty with 47 for the nine holes. Ella Johnson (sophomore) shot 64, Cassidy Sundine (junior) had 66 and Brianna Butterfield (freshman) shot a 69, while Grace Crimmins (sophomore) finished the day with 74. Marit McCaffery (freshman) is also on the squad but did not compete.
“Neely will be our top player and will compete for individual honors in most of our meets,” Wernimont said. “With the help of the remaining players we will also be competitive for team titles by year’s end.”
Wernimont is one of the professionals at the Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville. “We were set to host the Liberty teams at our course and I took the opportunity to also be able to coach the teams,” he said. He brings 20 years’ experience in golf to the Lightning with 13 years in the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA). McCarty is a former NCAA All-American at the University of Iowa and also is a PGA pro at Brown Deer with several years of competitive and teaching experience.
As is typical of Liberty’s fledgling teams, upperclassmen are scarce with Sundine the only junior on the freshman-dominated squad. “Obviously as mostly underclassmen, you are chasing the more experienced teams,” Wernimont said. “But we have a great core of players and will be able to surprise people this year.”
The Lightning will face Iowa City West Thursday, April 5, at the Finkbine Golf Course (1380 Melrose Ave., Iowa City) at 3:15 p.m. Liberty is at home (Brown Deer Golf Course, 1900 Country Club Dr., Coralville) on Tuesday, April 10, at 4 p.m. Liberty’s second and final home meet will be on Tuesday, May 1, as Solon visits at 3 p.m.
