Liberty XC boys 6th at Jim Boughton Invitational

Gryp breaks Woodward’s record, Bolts set 19 personal bests

DUBUQUE– Liberty High’s cross country boys ran Thursday, Sept. 26, in Dubuque Senior’s Jim Boughton Invitational at the Dubuque Soccer Complex, and stunned Head Coach Josh Hildebrand.
“Speechless! This team never ceases to amaze the coaches!” he wrote. “On only two days rest (the team competed Monday, Sept. 23, in Solon’s Invitational), the boys set 19 personal records and one school record!”
Bo Gryp, a junior, set the school record with a second-place finish in the varsity race in 16:24. He broke the previous record, set by teammate Peter Woodward in the 2017 state meet. Woodward, Jack Kinzer, Christian Montover, Caleb Schillinger, Gavin Keeney, Ethan Keeney, Logan Nelson, Spencer Knight, Boden Bisgard, Luke Gage and Luke Thompson did not run in preparation for a Saturday, Sept. 28, trip to the University of Minnesota’s Roy Griak Invitational.
Dubuque Hempstead won the varsity race with a team score of 20 followed by Western Dubuque with 70. The Lightning were sixth with 144. Liberty’s junior varsity (JV) team was third behind champion Dubuque Hempstead (17 points) and runner-up Waterloo (67) with 81 team points. Tyler Lambert led the JV team with an eighth-place finish in 18:44.
“From top to bottom this team is believing in the system, and it’s showing!” said Hildebrand.
