Lady Spartans trample Trojans, 63-24

Solon's Elly Holubar watches as one of her free throws drops during the Lady Spartans' 63-24 win over the South Tama Trojans, at home, on Thursday, Dec. 17.

SOLON– The Lady Spartans varsity basketball team continued its win streak on Thursday, Dec. 17, at home, trampling the South Tama Trojans, 63-24.
The Lady Spartans took to the court with a different swagger on Thursday against the Trojans, shooting with confidence and maintaining the defense that provided them with their Tuesday win over the Marion Indians.
Solon shot out to a 14-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and held the Trojans to single digits with a 29-9 halftime lead.
Head Coach Jamie Smith spread the playtime, giving the bench some additional experience, and the Lady Spartans outscored South Tama 22-11 in the third for a 51-20 lead at the end of the period, and finished the game, after activating the continuous clock a little over a minute into the fourth quarter, with a final of 63-24.
The Lady Spartans’ “PTM on three!” mantra could be heard with authority following timeouts during the game.
“I think we are playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Head Coach Jamie Smith commented. “I think we struggled a little on offense early but our defense played well enough to get us through that stretch.”
MaKinley Levin led the scoring for the Lady Spartans with 20 points. She had pulled down four rebounds, one offensive and three defensive, with one assist and a steal.
Elly Holubar and Callie Levin both scored 12 points. Holubar collected 13 rebounds, seven offensive and six defensive, and had an assist and a steal. Levin collected eight rebounds, one offensive and seven defensive, recorded five assists, five steals and blocked a shot.
Kaia Holtkamp scored eight points and pulled down a defensive rebound while recording two assists.
Claire LaDage added six points for Solon, pulling down three rebounds, one offensive and two defensive. She also recorded a steal.
Jada Buffington scored three points, pulled down a defensive rebound and had an assist and a steal.
Hailey Miller scored two points, grabbed an offensive rebound and recorded an assist and a steal.
Hilary Wilson pulled down five rebounds, one offensive and four defensive, recorded two assists, one steal and two blocked shots. Ava Stebral stole the ball once and Alex Locke battled for an offensive rebound and recorded an assist.
Coach Smith was proud of the team’s performance going to the boards for the ball.
“Rebounding is a lot of ‘Go get the ball,’ we have players that like to compete so that makes rebounding easier at times,” he said. “I would also say we are just better on the defensive end than we have been in the past.”
The Lady Spartans moved to 5-2 on the season, while South Tama was relegated to 0-2.
The final game before the winter break was scheduled to take Solon to Independence to face the Mustangs Dec. 22.
Coach Smith still remains focused on the next game.
“Indee has a hot coach and they will be well prepared,” he said.
His focus has not quite turned to games following the New Year.
“For break we will have five-six days off then get back at,” he explained. “Haven't even thought about our opponents except Indee. Its the WaMaC, so all the games will be tough.”
The New Year schedule currently has the Lady Spartans visiting West Delaware for a 6 p.m. tip off on Jan. 5, then hosting Beckman Catholic on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. and traveling to Xavier Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
