Lady Spartans stunned by Beckman Catholic, 58-52

Callie Levin early foul trouble, Lady Spartans come up short
Solon's Ava Stebral blocks a late game shot by Beckman Catholic's Kennedy Arens as the Lady Spartans attempted to rally from behind during the 58-52 loss to the Blazers, at home, on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

SOLON– The Lady Spartans tasted defeat at the hands of the Beckman Catholic Blazers, 58-52, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at home, yet three players scored in double digits.
The Lady Spartans built to 10-5 lead with a little over 1:45 remaining in the first quarter on a lunging bucket from underneath by junior Kaia Holtkamp. Subsequent baskets by Elly Holubar and Callie Levin elevated Solon to a 14-5 advantage as the end of the quarter hit. Levin possessed seven of the Lady Spartans’ 14 and had yet to earn a foul. In the first minute and a half of the second quarter, the Blazers closed to trail by three, 14-11, and another minute passed before Callie Levin dropped in a field goal broadening Solon’s lead to five, 16-11. Beckman Catholic tied the game at 16-all with a little more than three minutes remaining in the half. A minute later and MaKinley Levin dropped a three-pointer to give Solon a 19-16 advantage. At the end of the half, the Lady Spartans entered the locker room with a 21-16 lead.
A little more than a minute into the second half, the Blazers tied the game at 21-all as Solon was handicapped with Callie Levin on the bench accruing three fouls in the second quarter. Mak Levin gave Solon the advantage with another three less than 15 ticks later and Beckman answered with two of their own 30 ticks later. The Blazers rallied and the Lady Spartans found themselves trailing 42-33 at the end of three. Callie Levin returned to the court at the start of the fourth and both teams played solid defense as the gap remained 44-35 in favor of Beckman at the 4:17 mark.
Solon clawed its way back as a little more than 30 seconds glowed atop the scoreboard; Solon trailed Beckman, 54-49. Desperation fouling kept both teams going to the charity line with Callie Levin delivering a four-point deficit, 56-52, with 1.9 atop the scoreboard. The horn sounded and Beckman emerged victorious, 58-52.
“We just kept playing. Down 11 with 54 seconds left got them turn it over we hit a couple of threes and got to the foul line. Got a steal with 15.6 left and the refs thought we traveled,” Head Coach Jamie Smith elaborated. “We played as hard the last two minutes as a team can play.”
Kaia Holtkamp and Mak Levin stepped up and helped Solon get back in the game, he added.
“Ava (Stebral) hit a big three the last two minutes and got a huge steal that gave us the ball and a chance to win at the end,” he added.
Beckman’s Kennedy Arens led all scorers in the game with 24 points.
Callie Levin led Solon’s scoring efforts with 16 points, grabbing three rebounds (two offensive), accruing three assists and a steal. Holtkamp had 15 points and MaKinley Levin had 12 points in the game. Elly Holubar was once again Solon’s most effective rebounder with eight total (three offensive).
“Hard to win games like that with your leading scorer on the bench for a whole quarter,” Coach Smith asserted. “She will learn from it.”
He added with a smile, “No comments on the fouls.”
Solon had a road date with the Maquoketa Cardinals on Friday, Feb. 5.
“Maquoketa has a lot of size that caused us problems the second half of the last game we played them,” Coach Smith reflected. “They have a couple good shooters that we will have to be aware of. Callie has been targeted all year. We have enough players, as has been shown, that can score so we feel we can score enough to win.”
