Lady Spartans split with Williamsburg

Monet Barnhouse was just shy of a cycle with a single, a double and a triple during Solon's 10-0 win at Williamsburg July 1. Barnhouse was 3-3, had five RBI and two stolen bases.

WILLIAMSBURG– Solon’s varsity softball team split a road doubleheader with the Williamsburg Raiders July 1.
Williamsburg took the opener, 8-7, in eight innings, then Solon stormed back for a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap.
The Lady Spartans shot out of the gates for three runs in the top half of the first inning, but the Raiders responded with a run and then tied game one with two more in the second.
After two scoreless innings, the offenses came back to life.
Solon scored twice in the fifth, but Williamsburg plated three runs later that inning to take a 6-5 lead.
The Lady Spartans evened it up with a run in the sixth and then both teams put up a run in the seventh for a 7-7 tie. The Raiders took the win with a walk-off in the bottom of the eighth.
Peyton Sands suffered the loss for Solon on the mound in relief of starter Carly Ellison. Sands struck out three and walked one while giving up five runs on seven hits, while Ellison struck out one and walked five over four innings, allowing three runs and two hits.
Taylor Moore hit her second home run of the year for the Lady Spartans and had three RBI. Skylar Stookey was 3-4 at the plate with a double, while Sarah Heick and Elyse Rios were each 2-4. One of Heick’s hits was a double; Rios had an RBI and two stolen bases.
Solon’s Kayla West threw a one-hit shutout in game two, striking out five and walking three in the 10-0 win.
The Lady Spartans cranked out 13 hits, with a home run and two RBI for Stookey. Monet Barnhouse was just shy of a cycle with a single, a double and a triple. Solon ended the regular season dropping two games to ranked opponents at an Ottumwa tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Spartans dropped to 21-15 on the year with losses to 15th-ranked (Class 5A) Southeast Polk, 11-5, and fifth-rated (3A) Albia, 4-3.
Madison Sprague took the loss against Southeast Polk, relieving starter Ellison after 1 1/3 innings. Sprague struck out two and walked three, giving up nine runs on six hits.
Southeast Polk built an 8-0 lead over the first three innings, although Solon rallied back for three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Heick hit her fifth home run of the season and had three RBI. Ryan had a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
West took the loss against Albia, striking out eight and walking two while giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings.
Albia had a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but the Lady Spartans tied it in the fourth. Albia retook the lead with two runs in the fifth and Solon could only rally for one run in the sixth.
Moore was 2-3 with two runs scored.
The Lady Spartans were scheduled to begin Class 3A postseason play Wednesday, July 10, hosting Mid-Prairie in a Region 5 quarterfinal. A win would place Solon in a semifinal against either Roland-Story or Benton Community Friday, July 12, in Solon with a 7 p.m. start. The regional final will be Monday, July 15, hosted by the highest-remaining seed.
