Lady Spartans split with No. 5 Mustangs

West pitches one-hitter in win

MOUNT VERNON– Solon’s varsity softball team halted a five-game skid by splitting with fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Mount Vernon on the road July 8.
The win didn’t stop the Lady Spartans from dropping out of the July 9 softball rankings issued by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Solon had been ranked 13th.
The Lady Spartans scored freshman Hilary Wilson in the top of the sixth inning to provide a 1-0 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Mustangs.
Senior Kayla West delivered a one-hitter on the mound, striking out one and walking none over seven innings and 22 at-bats.
West and Wilson accounted for two each of the Lady Spartans’ six hits. The others belonged to juniors Stella Mesch and Monet Barnhouse.
Mount Vernon prevailed by the same 1-0 score in game one.
Solon managed only four hits in the opener. Sophomore starting pitcher Carly Ellison had two of them, while sophomore Meghan O’Neill added a single and sophomore Ava Stebral a double.
Mount Vernon’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth spoiled Ellison’s day on the mound. She limited the Mustangs to five hits, giving up a single unearned run while striking out three and walking one.
The Lady Spartans moved to 16-11 on the season.
