Lady Spartans split with Creek Girls

CCA wins JV game, 9-5; Solon takes varsity, 5-1

SOLON— The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers and the Solon Lady Spartans met on the softball diamond Wednesday, June 13, in Solon, for a pair of non-divisional rivalry games.The Clipper JV squad defeated Solon, 9-5, thanks in part to a home run in the top of the fourth inning by Lillie Haman. Haman’s solo shot put the Creek Girls ahead, 8-2.
The Lady Spartans threatened early in the varsity game, but were held scoreless until the bottom of the third when they put all five runs on the scoreboard. Madison Rogers set the wheels in motion with a base hit, followed by Skylar Stookey with a single. Calista Haasl courtesy-ran for Stookey, the Spartans’ catcher. Taylor Moore loaded the bases with her own single, setting the table for pitcher Kayla West, who knocked an RBI single. Jada Buffington drove in two more runs with a long ball double for a 3-0 lead. Ava Stebral made it 4-0 with a sacrifice RBI before Jadyn Jeter walked on a full count. Monet Barnhouse sent the fifth and final run home with an RBI double.
The Lady Spartans threatened again in the bottom of the fourth as Stookey singled, Moore walked, and West singled to load up the bases again, after lead off hitter Rogers was DOA at first base. However, courtesy runner Stella Mesch was gunned down for out number two and the Clipper defense knocked off Stebral at first to get out of the inning without any further damage being inflicted upon them.
The solitary Creek Girls run came in the top of the fifth as Grace Bedford singled while her dugout chanted, “Oxford Sale Barn!” Lydia Banwart scampered to first base on a passed ball and was replaced by courtesy runner Whitney Traetow. Allie Rummelhart advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt before Karsyn Stratton drove in the run with a sacrifice fly ball.
West took the win for Solon, going the distance and giving up five hits and one run. She struck out nine batters and walked two. Raina Henze was the losing pitcher for CCA, also going the full distance in the circle. Henze gave up 14 hits and five runs, striking out one and walking two. Grace Bedford recorded a pair of base hits, while Gabrielle Bedford, Ainsley Schrock and Danielle Wnek had one hit apiece for the Creek Girls.Rogers and West unofficially had three base hits apiece with two from Moore, Stookey and Buffington (a double and a single). Jeter and Barnhouse had one hit each with a double for Barnhouse. Buffington was credited with a pair of RBIs, West, Stebral and Barnhouse drove in one run each.
CCA’s Stratton had their solitary RBI of the evening.
The Creek Girls host their home invitational tournament on Friday, June 22, and Saturday, June 23, in Oxford, and travel to Center Point-Urbana on Monday, June 25, for a 6 p.m. doubleheader. CCA remains on the road Wednesday, June 27, with a 6 p.m. doubleheader, in Van Horne, against Benton Community.
The Lady Spartans host their tournament on Friday, June 22, and Saturday, June 23, then head to Farley Park, in Farley, on Monday, June 25, for a 6 p.m. doubleheader against Western Dubuque, Epworth. Mount Vernon visits for a doubleheader Wednesday, June 27, at 6 p.m.
