Lady Spartans pick up first win

Solon goes 2-1 at Marshalltown tournament
Junior Sydney Langenberg shoots the ball toward the net Aug. 29 against Center Point Urbana in Solon Aug. 29. Langenberg was double digit in digs against Marshalltown (11) and Columbus Catholic (16) Sept. 5.

MARSHALLTOWN– Win one is under the belt.
But there’s more growing pains coming for the Solon varsity volleyball team.
The Lady Spartans picked up their first win of the season at a Marshalltown tournament Sept. 5, but lost junior setter Kennedy Bombei to injury.
Solon defeated Marshalltown and Columbus Catholic by 2-1 scores, but fell 2-0 to No. 7 (4A) Waverly-Shell Rock.
“We ended up losing Kennedy in the last set against Columbus and that had us shaken up for Waverly,” reported Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin. “Maddie Manifold went down during Waverly as well so our lineup is changing again.”
Solon dropped the opening game against both Marshalltown and Columbus Catholic, and came back for the victories.
“They were similar, we needed to wake up a bit against both teams and once we did, we executed better,” Ferin said.
After losing the first game 21-11 to Marshalltown, Solon nudged ahead for a 21-18 win in the second game and held on for a 17-15 win.
Kennedy Bombei led the Lady Spartans with seven kills and 13 assists. Senior Katie Yi and freshman Delaney Bombei each had six kills. Junior Sydney Langenberg had 11 digs for the defense, which also came up with seven blocks, led by Delaney Bombei with three and Manifold with two.
Kennedy Bombei was 13-14 from the service stripe with an ace. Aces were also recorded by senior Khaylor Fleck, Manifold and senior Jane Wilms.
“It definitely improved our confidence, we know we can push, we just needed to push all the way through the game to get the W,” Ferin noted. “The players are getting more confidence with each other.”
Against Columbus Catholic, Solon emerged from a 0-1 hole after losing the first game, 21-19.
This time, the Lady Spartans took control in game two for a 21-14 win, and outlasted Columbus 15-10 in the deciding game.
Yi led the offense with eight kills, while Delaney Bombei added six and Manifold five. Kennedy Bombei had 23 assists and nine digs before leaving the game. Langenberg led the team with 16 digs, while Yi and senior Brookelyn Whitford each added eight.
Delaney Bombei had five of the team’s nine blocks.
“She has such a great attitude and has been a great addition to the team this year,” Ferin added.
The Lady Spartans were 50-55 at the service line, with perfect matches for Langenberg (11-11), Kennedy Bombei and Yi (8-8), sophomore Camryn Keith (6-6) and senior Emma Harris (3-3). Fleck had the team’s only ace.
Waverly-Shell Rock dispatched Solon in straight sets (21-13, 21-9).
The Lady Spartans had 10 kills, led by Manifold with three. Freshman Kylee Flynn had eight assists and six digs stepping in as setter. Langenberg had seven digs, but Solon had no blocks.
At a Cedar Rapids Washington tournament Saturday, Sept. 7, the Lady Spartans went 1-2 with a 2-1 win over Dubuque Senior and 2-0 losses to Linn-Mar and Marion.
Ferin said Flynn has been doing a good job filling in.
“The outlook for Kennedy right now is unclear, but we have a great team of players who are rallying around each other and we are going to take it one game at a time,” she added.
After hosting Mount Vernon Sept. 10, the Lady Spartans travel to Vinton for a quad meet with Oelwein, Dyersville Beckman and host Vinton-Shellsburg Thursday, Sept. 12, then travel to Linn-Mar for an invitational Saturday, Sept. 14.
