Lady Spartans come from behind against Linn-Mar, Marshalltown

Solon starts season battling bigger schools

SOLON– Solon’s varsity volleyball team is putting it together.
The Lady Spartans collected wins over Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids Washington and Linn-Mar while facing a bevy of larger schools during a varsity round robin tourney Sept. 5.
Solon swept the Warriors of CR Wash 2-0, and galloped back for 2-1 wins over Marshalltown’s Bobcats and the Lions of Linn-Mar, 2-1.
The Lady Spartans also suffered losses at the hands of No. 8 (4A) Waverly-Shell Rock (2-0), Dubuque Senior (2-1) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (2-1) to move to 3-4 on the young season.
“We’ve played some tough teams,” noted first-year Head Coach Jeff Walker. “We are getting a rotation put together and it has showed.”
Solon dropped its first game to Marshalltown, 22-20, but then battled back for narrow wins in the second (21-18) and third (15-11). Junior Camryn Keith led the offense in kills while sophomore Delaney Bombei delivered nine blocks. Keith and senior Katlyn Jeter had three service aces each. Sophomore Kylee Flynn had 17 assists, while senior Kennedy Bombei added 11.
The Spartans also fell behind against Linn-Mar before wresting control away. Solon dropped game one 25-19, but pulled out a 25-23 win in game two and put the Lions away with a 15-10 win in the deciding third set.
Keith again led in kills with seven, with another 11 assists for Kennedy Bombei and five blocks each for Delaney Bombei and Jeter. Flynn served four aces.
“The offense is looking much better,” Walker noted. “Our passing has gotten better, that’s why our offense is getting better.”
Solon had little trouble with the Warriors, handing winless CR Wash 25-15 and 25-8 losses.
Flynn had seven assists, while Jeter had four kills. Junior Maddie Manifold, Keith and Delaney Bombei added three kills each.
The Spartans took game one against both Kennedy (25-15) and Dubuque Senior (25-16) before falling in the second and third game of each match. Solon just missed an upset of Kennedy, dropping game two 25-22 and losing game three 16-14. Manifold and Keith each had nine kills while Kennedy Bombei had 15 assists in the match. Manifold had six blocks and Delaney Bombei added five. Keith pitched nine aces, while Kennedy Bombei added six.
“The team is getting better everyday and it will be fun to see how far we can go,” Walker reported. “We might surprise some teams.”
No. 1 (3A) Mount Vernon was scheduled to host Solon Sept. 8.
Winless Oelwein, Beckman Catholic and Vinton-Shellsburg visit the Lady Spartans for a quadrangular meet Sept. 10, and Solon travels to Linn-Mar for a rematch Sept. 12.
