Jeff Walker named interim head volleyball coach

SOLON– Solon High School Activities Director Casey Hack took to Twitter to announce Jeff Walker as head volleyball coach.
“Pending School Board approval help me welcome Jeff Walker as Interim Head Volleyball Coach at Solon HS. Jeff is excited to lead our volleyball program and create a dynamic atmosphere. #solonstrong,” the Tweet read.
“Jeff did a great job as our sophomore coach here a couple years ago and he is familiar with the program,” Hack commented via email. “Jeff has a lot of experience coaching volleyball at every level.
“We are excited for him to lead our program,” Hack added.
Coach Walker has been part of the Lady Spartans’ volleyball program previously; he spent three years with previous Coach Sarah Ferin’s program prior to taking off Solon’s last season, which ended at 15-22.
Ferin resigned in December.
“I came to Solon with Coach Ferin four years ago, and stayed for three years, took last season off and heard she had resigned,” Walker elaborated. “So I thought I would apply and see what happens.”
Coach Walker brings 23 years of coaching at a variety of levels with him to draw from.
“I have been coaching volleyball for the past 23 years,” he said. “I’ve been a head coach (in) junior varsity and most of my time (with) sophomores. Plus coaching at Solon for three years.”
“As far as scholastic sports go,” Coach Walker added. “I have always been involved in sports most of my life. The first time I played volleyball was in Germany while in the Army and was hooked. I played volleyball up till I was older.”
He was coy about giving an age.
New to the position, Coach Walker quickly professed he was still in the early stages of transitioning to the position.
“I haven’t put (together) a concept /expectation or just about anything else yet,” he confessed April 7. “We are still trying to fill coaching positions and find out who’s going out with this virus going around, it’s a one-day-at-a-time and things move slow now.”
Via email, Hack affirmed, “We have also hired Rylee Smith as an assistant coach and we are in the process of hiring the rest of our coaching staff.”
In the meantime, the Spartan faithful have Coach Walker excited about the future leading the Lady Spartans’ volleyball team.
“The fan base, when I was there, was outstanding,” he praised. “Students, parents and the community, and (I) know it will continue.”
