IHSAA new district and group assignments 2021 and 2022 football season

DES MOINES– The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced, following its regular Board of Control meeting on Thursday, March 11, new group assignments for the 2021 and 2022 football seasons.
A new seventh classification (Class 5A) was adopted, after being approved in January, to reduce enrollment disparity in the IHSAA’s largest class of football and increase participating teams and student athletes competing in the postseason across classes.
The Class 5A groups are effective for two years after 2020’s one-year assignments. The Class 5A model originated in February of 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic changes were incorporated in July to the football scheduling and postseason.
The Solon Spartans’ varsity football team remains in Class 3A for the 2021-2022 football district assignments competing in District No. 5 for 2021 and 2022 with the Fairfield Trojans, Grinnell Tigers, Keokuk Chiefs, Washington Demons and the West Burlington/Notre Dame Nikes.
Class 3A under the revised structure is comprised of 36 teams broken into six districts of six teams vying for 16 playoff berths. The playoff berths are comprised of the top two per district plus four at-large berths based upon RPI. There will be nine regular season games– five district games and four non-district games per team.
At 10:34 a.m. on March 12, @FootballSolon tweeted “District for the next 2 years! #EPEP” accompanied by the new District No. 5 list followed by another tweet 10:48 a.m. with the playoff format, wetting the appetite of the Spartan Nation for the potential of a post-COVID football season.
