West’s Women of Troy lose upset bid in overtime
West High’s Maddie Huinker goes up for two points in varsity action Tuesday, Jan. 26, at home against Cedar Falls. Huinker scored 13 points in the Women of Troy’s 64-60 overtime loss.

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy came up just a bit short in a bid to pull off a major upset in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Valley Division Tuesday, Jan. 26. The Cedar Falls Tigers rolled into Iowa City, 14-1 overall and 8-0 in conference play to lead the division, while the Women of Troy were 10-5 and 6-2.
After trailing throughout most of the game, the West High ladies came alive in the fourth period and forced the game into overtime, but ultimately lost, 64-60. Paige Beckner sank a 3-point shot giving West a 40-39 lead in the opening of the fourth and sparking a back-and-forth battle. With 1:21 remaining in the period, Maddie Huinker went to the free throw line and sank two, but West trailed, 51-48. Lauren Zacharias hit a 3-pointer to tie it with 1:01 to go. With 17.3 seconds left Huinker nailed two more charity shots, tying the game at 53-53. West defense prevented the Tigers from getting a shot in the closing seconds, leading to the extra period.
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 58-53 lead, which was narrowed slightly by a Logan Cook two-point shot. Tense moments and a silent gymnasium ensued as Rachel Saunders crashed hard while attempting to block a shot. Saunders was able to walk off the court with assistance a few minutes later to applause. However, insult was added to her injury as a foul call related to the melee put a Tiger on the line for two successful free throws giving the Tigers a 60-55 lead.
Zacharias narrowed the gap with a two-point shot with just under one minute remaining, but foul trouble reared its ugly head again as two more charity shots aided the visitors’ cause, leading to a 62-57 gap. With 15.4 seconds remaining, Cook sank a key two-point shot and drew a foul sending her to the line for one successful free throw and putting West down 62-60. A foul on West during a rebound with 2.7 seconds sent the Tigers to the line for the fateful final free throws, sealing the Women of Troy’s fate.
Cook led West High with 17 points followed by Huinker with 13.
