Goings is going away

NL city councilor resigns effective May 16

NORTH LIBERTY– For the second time this year, the North Liberty City Council will have to decide how best to fill a vacancy in its ranks.
Council member Jennifer Goings submitted a letter of resignation to the mayor and council on Tuesday, April 23.
The resignation is effective Thursday, May 16.
Goings wrote, “With our recent engagement, my fiancé and I have had many discussions about where we will build our family, together with his children from his previous marriage, as my fiancé lives in a northern corridor community. After much discussion, we feel at this point in time it is in the best interest of our family to establish our home together in the community where the children go to school and are established in activities. Although we both love the North Liberty community, we feel this is the best decision for our family at this time.”
Goings was elected on Nov. 7, 2017, and her term expires in December 2021.
The council took no action at its April 23 meeting, and a social media posting by the city stated, “Council will decide at a later point what course of action they will take.”
Goings is the second council member to leave this year. Councilman Jim Sayre resigned in December 2018 triggering a special election, held in February. Council member RaQuishia Harrington topped a field of six candidates to win the seat. Her term expires in December.
