Gatorade Player of the Year

West High’s Evan Flitz is state’s best QB

IOWA CITY– West High’s standout quarterback, Evan Flitz, was named the 2017 Gatorade Iowa Football Player of the Year. The Gatorade Company announced Flitz’s selection Monday, Dec. 11.
“The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Flitz as Iowa’s best high school football player,” a press release from Gatorade said. Flitz is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award, to be announced later this month.
Flitz, a 6-foot, 180-pound senior, passed for 2,978 yards and 31 touchdowns this season while leading the Trojans to a 12-1 record and their second-consecutive Class 4A state championship game. This year, he completed 207 of 293 passes with only five interceptions and rushed 104 times for 549 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also broke Class 4A state championship game records with 30 completions and 347 yards passing.
“Flitz is a dynamic quarterback who runs the ball very well and throws it even better,” Cedar Rapids Washington Coach Mo Blue stated. “I think the best thing about him are his intangibles: his calmness under pressure is very noticeable and he’s one of those guys that makes everyone around him better.”
He excels in the classroom, as well as on the gridiron, by maintaining a 4.0 grade point average and founded the school’s environmental club, SustainabiliTrees. As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Flitz will be able to select a national or local sports youth organization to receive a grant as part of the company’s Play it Forward program. Every Player of the Year state winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate and will have the opportunity to enter for an additional $10,000 spotlight grant by writing a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support. A total of 12 grants (one for each sport Gatorade recognizes) will be announced throughout the year.
West High Athletic Director Craig Huegel noted Flitz is the third football Trojan recognized with the award, joining Oliver Martin (2016) and Alex Kanellis.
