Four seniors to lead Trojans on the mat

IOWA CITY– Four seniors, three of whom have state tournament experience, will lead the West High Trojan varsity wrestling program in the 2015-2016 season.
Donovan Doyle was fourth in the 2015 state individual meet and posted a 46-11 record. Doyle will wrestle at 195 pounds this year. Aaron Stumpf placed eighth at state and went 31-17 last season. He’ll battle on the mat at 126 pounds. Nate Kelsay was a state meet qualifier with a 35-26 record, and will compete at 170 pounds. Ben Bertell, wrestling at 145 pounds, rounds out the seniors. Bertell finished with a 15-25 record last season.
Juniors Carter Rohweder, Tyler Yoerger and Sam Cayler are back in the lineup as well. Rohweder finished fourth in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament and will wrestle at 160 pounds. Rohweder went 23-20 last season. At 152 pounds, Yoerger went 13-28 and placed seventh at the MVC, while Cayler had a 6-25 record. Cayler will also compete at 152 pounds.
Five sophomores– Nelson Brands, Hans Von Rabenau, Hunter Davis, Caden Fedeler and Joe Briddle– are also returning letter winners for West this season. Brands had a 35-15 record and will compete at 138 pounds. He placed first at the MVC last season. Von Rabenau went 8-7 and will wrestle at 106 pounds; Davis went 7-8 and will compete at 113 pounds; Fedeler made a 6-2 showing last season and will grapple at 160 pounds; while Briddle was 4-7 and will alternate with Doyle at 195 pounds.
It’s the 17th season at West High School for coach Mark Reiland, who has a 401-71-1 record. The Trojans were 17-9 overall last season with a 7-3 showing in the MVC.
The season opens on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Cedar Rapids Xavier with a dual meet starting at 6 p.m. The first home meet is set for Thursday, Dec. 17, with a double-dual against Cedar Falls and Dubuque Senior beginning at 5:30 p.m.
