TIFFIN– It’s been nearly five years since Tiffin residents put a grocery store at the top of their wish list, and last week the city came a few shovelfuls closer to reaching that dream.
On the sunny afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 23, gold shovels in hand, representatives of the City of Tiffin, Fareway Stores, Inc. and the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce broke ground together at the site of the upcoming Fareway grocery store. Located at 500 Croell Ave., the city’s first grocery store will be approximately 19,000 square feet in scale, and is expected to open its doors spring 2019.
Tiffin Mayor Steve Berner addressed attendees, thanking Melvin Reeve, who agreed to sell the roughly 10 acres of farm ground solely on the condition that a Fareway grocery store be constructed on it. Berner also credited City Administrator Doug Boldt for his persistent phone calls and keeping on task in making the deal a reality.
The Tiffin Fareway will be almost identical to the recently opened Peosta location. It will not house a bakery; however, the Tiffin City Council was assured it would be adequately supplied with fresh-baked goods. The council unanimously passed a resolution approving the construction of the store on Dec. 5 last year.
“Besides the conveniences that Fareway offers, grocery stores in general are just great economic drivers for the community and particularly wonderful community partners in all that they do,” remarked Kim Casko, President and CEO of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce. “I look forward to seeing the impact that Fareway’s going to have on Tiffin.”
Currently, the closest Fareway to Tiffin is located about 5.4 miles away at 615 Westwood Dr. in North Liberty. The new Tiffin location will be the fourth Fareway store to join the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce.
“I just saw a beautiful butterfly go by and it was looking for a place to land, and how cool will it be when there’s not only a beautiful store, but we’ve got some nice grass and trees, and how beautiful it will be coming into this great city on the highway,” remarked Fareway CEO Reynolds W. Cramer.
“I hope you’re gonna be the first customer when we open,” he told Reeve’s mother, who was in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony. “We’ll make sure we’ve got a spot for you.”
Based in Boone, Fareway Stores, Inc. is a growing Midwest company currently operating 121 stores located in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. The company employs over 11,000 people.
“We get to have the fun when it comes to building the store and getting it open, but it doesn’t happen without all of you in this community,” Cramer added. “To be back here and cut that ribbon and be open for business to serve this community for years to come, that’ll be even more exciting.”
