Fall into Cleanup Day

City offers alternate options for annual disposal day

NORTH LIBERTY– Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of North Liberty cancelled its annual spring cleanup day with plans to offer an alternative in the fall. While we won’t be able to host the day as normally, we are offering residential refuse customers some alternatives to dispose of additional refuse in November.
The options for residential North Liberty customers who pay $.30 a month ($3.60 per year) on their city utility bill are a landfill disposal voucher valued up to $7.50 for the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center or two stickers valued at $6 for curbside disposal on the customer’s normal collection day. Details of each are below.
Selections can be made now and will be distributed starting Monday, Nov. 9. The deadline for selections is 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23. Only one selection will be accepted and processed per household.
Those in need of help or with questions about the options may contact city hall at 319-626-5700.

Landfill disposal voucher
Customers with large quantities of waste may choose a voucher for $7.50, representing a 300-pound general load, for use at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center from Nov. 9 through Nov. 30. The voucher can also be used towards loads larger than 300 pounds or the disposal of appliances, electronics, tires or other waste with the customer paying any additional costs. The landfill also accepts the following items that cannot be included in general waste loads: yard waste, cardboard, computer and TV monitors, tires, appliances, lead acid batteries and oil. The landfill does not charge for the disposal of hazardous waste disposal or for general recycling but there are fees for items such as appliances and electronics. Visit the landfill website for more information.
To request a voucher, complete the online form online allowing at least two business days for processing. Vouchers will be emailed to the provided email address on Nov. 9, Nov. 16, Nov. 23 and Nov. 25. The deadline to make a selection is 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23.
To use the voucher, residents need to print the voucher and surrender it to the cashier at the landfill and recycling center. The customer is responsible for any charges over $7.50. The voucher may be used through Nov. 30.

Stickers for curbside collection
Customers with small quantities of extra refuse who cannot haul refuse to the landfill, can choose two stickers, representing two extra bags of trash, for curbside disposal on the customer’s normal collection day. The stickers can also be used towards the collection of larger items; the required number is listed below.
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters, washers, stoves, microwaves, dryers, dishwashers, televisions, queen size mattresses or box springs and computers require seven stickers. Sofa hide-a-beds or reclining sofas require 15 stickers. Sofas require 10 stickers. King size mattresses or box springs require eight stickers. Loveseats and full-size mattresses or box springs require six stickers. Stuffed chairs and recliners require five stickers. Twin size mattresses or box springs require four stickers. Grills and 3x8 carpet remnants require three stickers. Dressers require two stickers per drawer. Toilets and straight back chairs require two stickers and lamps require one sticker.
