Eight Trojans earn soccer honors

2017 MVC Boys’ Soccer All-Division selections

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans earned their ninth state soccer championship on Saturday, June 3, after entering the 2017 state tournament as the No. 8 seed with a 13-7 record. On Monday, June 5, the Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) released its All-Division selections for Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, as well as First, Second, Honorable Mention and All-Academic teams based on regular season performances.
Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Luke Duball was named the Mississippi Division’s Athlete of the Year. The Saints fell to Norwalk in the Class 2A championship and finished the season with a 14-4 record overall.
Cedar Falls’ Mike Penning and staff were named the division Coach of the Year with West High’s standout Zach Frisbie earning the division’s Keeper of the Year honor.
Waterloo West and Xavier shared team champion honors.
Cedar Rapids Washington’s Andrew Hammer was the Valley Division Athlete of the Year.
Prairie’s Curt Lewis and staff took the division’s Coach of the Year title.
West upset the undefeated Prairie Hawks, 2-1, (6-5 PKs) in the Class 3A quarterfinals.
City High’s Sam Tomek was the Valley Division Keeper of the Year.
Prairie took team champion honors with a 19-0 record (pre-state tournament).

First Team
Alex Andersen: Senior forward with 21 goals, 11 assists, 53 points and 46 shots on goal.
Zach Frisbie: Senior keeper with one assist, one point and one shot on goal. Allowed 18 goals and made 78 saves in the regular season.
Second Team
Sam Choi: Senior forward with 16 goals, two assists, 34 points and 37 shots on goal.
Adam Rose: Senior defender with two goals, three assists, seven points and five shots on goal. Rose made one PK in the regular season.
Conor Zielinski: Senior middle with one goal, two assists, four points and six shots on goal.
Honorable Mention
Coleson Krupp: Sophomore middle with three shots on goal.
Nicholas Raley: Senior forward with ten goals (pre-tournament), one assist, 21 points and 19 shots on goal.
All-Academic: Frisbie, Will Peterson.
