Creek Girls take two from Trojans on Senior Night

CCA defeats South Tama, 10-0 and 15-3

OXFORD– Senior Night for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity softball team was made sweeter as the Clippers swept the South Tama Trojans, 10-0 and 15-3, to improve to an 11-19 showing for the season.
The Creek Girls plated two runners in the bottom of the first inning of game one and put up six in the third to take an 8-0 lead. The game ended after two more Clipper runs in the sixth on the 10-run mercy rule. Karsyn Stratton led the Creek Girls at bat with three hits, including a home run and a double, while pitcher Raina Henze helped herself with two hits. Henze threw for six innings, giving up six hits and no runs. She walked one and struck out six.
The Creek Girls only slapped three hits in the nightcap, but managed to shell the Trojans, 15-3, in four innings. Tama scored all three of their runs in the top of the first, but CCA answered with five in the bottom half and unleashed an eight-run barrage in the second. Two more runs in the third sealed the Trojans’ fate.
Anna Fox put up two hits, including a triple, and drove in five runs. Gabrielle Bedford had one hit, a double. Kaly Thomas pitched three innings giving up two hits and three unearned runs. She walked three and struck out one.
Seniors Anna Fox, Abby Crow, Lydia Banwart and Katie Pitlick were recognized for their contributions to the CCA softball program.
The road to the Harlan Rogers Sports Complex and the 2019 Class 4A state championships starts Thursday, July 11, with a 7 p.m. Region 5 quarterfinal game against the Marion Indians, in Marion. The winner advances to face Independence, in Independence, on Saturday, July 13, at 7 p.m. The regional final is set for Tuesday, July 16, at the highest remaining ranked team’s site. Independence and Cedar Rapids Xavier are the ranked teams in Region 5. Liberty High and Washington will do battle July 11, in Washington, with the winner facing Xavier, at Xavier, on July 13.
