Creek Girls split with the Blazers

CCA defeats Beckman Catholic 7-4 and falls 6-5 in doubleheader

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity softball team opened July with a pair of doubleheader splits.
On Wednesday, July 1, the Clippers defeated rival Williamsburg 1-0 on a home run hammered by Gabrielle Bedford in the top of the sixth inning, at Williamsburg. Unfortunately, the tide turned against the Creek Girls in game two as the Raiders won the nightcap, 12-3. CCA led 2-1 in the top of the third inning, but a seven-run barrage from Williamsburg capsized the Clippers. A three-run attack by the Raiders in the fifth, and one more run in the sixth were just too much damage to recover from.
The Creek Girls started the Independence Day weekend with a home doubleheader against the Trailblazers from Dyersville Beckman Catholic High School, winning game one 7-4 and suffering a heartbreaking 6-5 loss in game two.
Beckman took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one, but Bailey Olerich equalized after walking, stealing second and third base, and scampering for home on an overthrown ball. In the second inning, Grace Bedford nailed an RBI double to score Katelyn LeFleur for a 2-1 advantage. Avery Allan drove Olerich home in the third, and scored on an Ainsley Schrock hit. Grace picked up her second RBI of the night as she drove in Gabrielle to make it 5-1 for the Clippers. CCA plated two runners in the fourth and held off a late surge by the Blazers, who scored once in the fifth, and twice in the seventh.
The Clippers opened the nightcap with two runs in the bottom of the first as two runners scored on a Schrock hit, one run scored in the fifth, and two runners were plated in the sixth, including Allie Rummelhart, who capitalized on a Cheyaenne Bunch hit making it 5-2. Beckman blazed a trail to home plate in the top of the seventh with four runs. Schrock hit a long, long double to left field, and attempted to score on a LeFleur hit. Unfortunately for CCA, the ball beat her to the dish for the third out of the inning, and the final out for the game.
The Creek Girls earned a first round bye in the 2020 Class 4A Regional contests, and will eagerly watch as Washington (IA) and Grinnell tangle on Thursday, July 16, in Washington in a 4A-Region 6 quarterfinal. The Clippers will face the winner on Saturday, July 18, at home at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the regional final on Tuesday, July 21.
Marion and Cedar Rapids Xavier will clash on July 16 in the top half of the Region 6 bracket with the winner facing West Delaware on July 18.
The 2020 State Softball Tournament is set for Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, in Fort Dodge.
