Creek Girls ready to hit the links

2021 CCA girls golf preview

AMANA– With the disappointment of not having a season due to the abrupt end to the school year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School girls’ golf team is more than ready to hit the links this spring.
Head Coach Cam Stockman, in his seventh year, talked about the challenges of a spring without golf.
“Everyone was totally bummed out. I had four seniors (Thea Ciennon, Emily Greathouse, Ellexia McCredie and Anna Schwarting) that were looking forward to having a good final year, and I was really thinking we would have a good year as a golf team. I touched base periodically to make sure I was thinking about them, and took all of my seniors flowers as recognition for their years of commitment to the golf team. I encouraged all of my players to try and practice as much as possible, and play if it was sensible and safe.”
With the year that wasn’t behind them, Stockman has many question marks as the 2021 season approaches.
“It makes it hard (not playing last year), because I really don’t know what I have coming in to make a solid varsity roster. I know a couple girls have been able to play a decent amount, but most of the other girls haven’t played a lot, so I will be evaluating in the first couple of weeks to try and throw together a varsity roster for our first meet (Thursday, April 8, versus Williamsburg and Benton Community) “which is about 2-1/2 weeks after our season officially starts.”
Weather is also a factor, Stockman said.
“The nice weather the past couple of weeks has really allowed the snow to melt, but all of the trees and hills at Amana (CCA’s home golf course) usually results in it being covered with snow and/or wet for longer than a lot of courses. I just hope we can get out there the week we get back from spring break, so we can start beating around some golf balls.”
The Clippers have three golfers, juniors Ellie Hagen, Cassady Jackson and Karlee Vice, who were on the squad in 2019 and are likely varsity starters, along with freshman Meg Berkland. Sophomores Jaden Adamson, Claire Beitz, Kathryn Hennes and Laney Jiras are new to the team with freshmen Delaney Bryant, Addesyn Campbell, Katie Evans, Addison Gisleson, Hannah Grabin, Lexi Moran, Marinda Phan, Sophia Root and Kenadi Wood.
Jim Berkland and Molly Cole are the team’s assistant coaches this season.
Stockman wasn’t quite sure what the competition will look like. “Williamsburg is usually tough, and I always expect Vinton-Shellsburg to be competitive, but it’s really hard to even think about, not knowing who graduated, and who they have coming in that can contribute.”
Speaking of Williamsburg, the coach is especially looking forward to the Clippers’ visit to Stone Creek Golf Course, in Williamsburg, on Wednesday, April 14.
“I love the golf course, and Jim Berkland stepped down from coaching there to help me out this year… so that adds another element to the meet.”
With the pandemic seeming to fade, spectator restrictions are being modified, yet schedules and said restrictions (determined by the state and local school districts) are still subject to change on short notice.
For golf, Stockman said it should pretty much be like any other season.
“Just a little more attention will be paid to social distancing,” he said. “Clubhouse mingling is discouraged, so we will try to have coaches’ meetings and meet results outside as much as possible, or sent out digitally.”
The Clippers host four meets this season at the Amana Colonies Golf Course, 451 U Ave. in Amana.
