TIFFIN– The opening tip-off of the 2020-2021 season finally arrived for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School varsity girls’ basketball team as they hosted their WaMaC East rivals, the Solon Lady Spartans, Friday, Dec. 4.
Solon (No. 14 in Class 3A) entered the contest with a 1-1 record after having knocked off Center Point-Urbana in their opener on Nov. 24, and falling to Central DeWitt on Dec. 1. The Clippers (No. 14 in Class 4A) however, were kept off the court until after Thanksgiving due to the CCA school district having moved to all online learning due to COVID-19.
The Creek Girls knocked off the rust quickly as they dominated in the first period, taking the quarter 15-2 with the first four points of the season being put up by junior Morgan Etscheidt. Whitney Traetow, a senior, put up two points with an assist by senior Emily Sly. Sly closed out the quarter with a pair of buckets.
Solon opened the second period with a steal and a basket by Kaia Holtkamp, but junior Kaylin Rotzoll drilled a three-pointer for CCA making it 18-4. Olivia Miller, a sophomore, sank a pair of three-pointers for the Clippers making it 27-9 while a Traetow three-bomb made it 32-9 on the way to a 38-15 halftime lead.
Solon’s MaKinley Levin drained a three-point bucket in the period while Claire LaDage had a pair of long bombs for the Lady Spartans.
Solon attempted to narrow the gap in the third period as a Callie Levin three-pointer made it a 40-20 ballgame, and a later three-bomb made it 47-25. The Clippers continued to dominate, however, and took a comfortable 51-32 lead into the final period with a three-pointer and free throw from Rotzoll, and baskets from Traetow, Calia Clubb, Miller and Ava Locklear.
The Creek Girls sealed the deal in the fourth period with buckets by Gabrielle Bedford and Traetow, and a rebound and basket from Clubb. After a foul sent Traetow crashing to the floor, she drained a pair of free throws to make it 61-42 while Bedford put up the final two points with an assist from Locklear.
Callie Levin continued to produce for Solon in the fourth quarter as their most prolific shooter, and finished the contest with a game-high 22 points. Clubb, a junior, had a team-high 14 points for CCA with 11 from Traetow and 10 from Miller.
The Clippers are scheduled for a girl-boy non-conference doubleheader at home against Grinnell on Thursday, Dec. 10, and are set to travel to Mount Vernon on Friday, Dec. 11, ahead of a Tuesday, Dec. 15, trip to Independence. However, the schedule may change on short notice. Also, current guidelines restrict attendance to only two spectators per participant. A live stream of the games at CCA should be available on the district’s YouTube channel.
