TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) girls varsity basketball team improved its record to 2-4 with a 49-42 win over the Vinton-Shellsburg (VS) Vikettes on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at home.
The Creek Girls took an early 8-2 lead in the first period after freshman Whitney Traetow led off for CCA with a two-point basket. The Clippers led 11-6 at the end of the quarter. While the Clippers led through much of the second period, the Vikettes proved to be a challenge, sinking a 3-pointer to make it 19-11 in favor of the Clippers. A pair of back-to-back 3-pointers from Vinton-Shellsburg brought the totals to 24-21, and the visitors took a 27-25 lead mere seconds before the halftime break.
The third quarter saw the Clippers fighting to regain the lead as VS kept a bucket or two ahead. Meagan Harvey tied the game at 32-apiece with a pair of free throws but another 3-point basket from the Vikettes made it 37-34 in favor of the visitors. VS led, 37-35, going into the final eight minutes. Allison Rummelhart gave the Creek Girls a 38-37 lead with a free throw and they never looked back, holding on for the win and dropping the Vikettes to 0-6.
Karsyn Stratton led all scorers with 23 points for CCA, with 13 from Harvey.
