TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity baseball team swept the visiting Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) Monday, June 26, at home in 18 innings.
The Clippers took an 11-inning opening game, 9-8, and sent the Pointers back into their kennels, 10-2, in the nightcap.
Tyler Hallett was the hero of game one as he put the Creek Boys on the scoreboard with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning, belted out a triple in the seventh, and ended the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to break an 8-8 tie.
Hallett’s second inning homer was followed by three more for a 4-0 lead. The Pointers put up three runs in the top of the third, while the Clippers added a run in the fourth. CP-U tied the game at five runs each in the top of the seventh and took their first lead with three in the top of the ninth. Cappy’s Boys rallied back with three in the bottom half when Kobey Schlotman drove in David Jensen with a double, before scoring on a wild pitch. Donovan Wildman also scored on a wild pitch to knot the game and send it into extra innings.
CCA had 15 hits from Hallett (three with two homers and a triple), Camden Smyka (three), Schlotman (two, including a double), T.J. Bollers (two, including a triple), Grant Riggan (two) Sam Stevens (two), and Jensen (a double). Jensen spent five innings on the mound giving up six hits and three earned runs, while striking out six and walking five. Riggan relieved Jensen and put in five innings giving up five hits and five unearned runs, while also striking out six. Alex Goedken finished for the Clippers, earning the save, and giving up three hits and striking out one.
Momentum was still with the Clippers, they put up two runs to open the nightcap and kept the Pointers at bay until the top of the fourth when CP-U equalized with what would be their only runs of the ballgame. Three Clippers scored in the bottom of the fourth as Schlotman belted out a two-RBI triple and came home on a Cody Ogden sacrifice. One CCA run was scored in the fifth. And, four Clippers crossed home plate in the sixth to seal the sweep.
Schlotman (two including a triple), Jensen (double), Ogden, Cam Armstrong, Riggan, Wildman and Tyler Schrepfer manufactured eight hits for the Clippers. Ogden went the distance on the mound giving up three hits and two unearned runs, while striking out 11 and walking one.
CCA moved to 9-17 on the season and the Pointers hit the .500 mark with a 13-13 record.
